I am in the middle east now but just bought the red sy from texas #989. I saw some people had some info about this truck but I wish the last couple owners did. When I get home in three weeks just wondering what I should check for other than whats on that what to look for when buying thread. Its a rebuilt title with some engine work so I am kind of scared but he said it drove good but needs tuned. I have wanted one for 15 years so I wasnt to picky. By the way a great site for us rookies.

Here's a list of the mods:

Kenne bell intake
Kenne bell headers
Kenne bell front mount intercooler with scoop
60-1
kenne bell performance chips (one for race gas and one for pump)
J&S Knock spark retard computer system with a/f and knock gauges
Ported vortec heads with oversized valves
Aftermarket springs & retainers, rockers, pushrods
intake manifold custom fabbed to fit vortec heads.
Electronic fuel pressure gauge (autometer)
Autometer boost gauge
Exhaust gas temperature gauge
kenne bell adjustable fuel pressure regulator
massive inline fuel pump and filter.
not sure if injectors are stock or aftermarket but 7th injector resides in underside of IC piping near Tbody
tranny has been rebuilt with heavy duty parts and 2800 stall
trans cooler with ss braided lines to cooler with fan and temp probe to activate.
turbonetics deltagate adjustabel wastegate 38mm
remote mbc for wastegate
rear end has disc setup with parking brake added. (not drum)
gauge pod in center console for four gauges.

Where are you coming home to? I got back from Iraq in July.
If you stay in the Austin/San Antonio area Id be happy to go over the truck with you and see what needs to be addressed.

This will be two years in Iraq but not all in a row. I head back in March so hopefully I can get some work done on this thing. My home is AZ but I appreciate the offer. Thanks.

If this is the one with the Salvage Title, I would have it checked by a very good body shop for frame / crash damage very first thing. Then go from there. Welcome!

I will definitely get the frame checked out. I did get a car fax on it and it showed no signs of a wreck or frame damage but a couple thefts. I know there are ways around this but it was a good price so I am going to hope its good.

I haven't seen it but the guy told me that it runs lean and knocks at wot along with overboosting (18psi). He believes it has stock injectors and I guess the wastegate is too far from the turbo so he thinks its creeping. Like I said I haven't seen it but I am taking his word for it. Lucky for me its not a daily driver.

Hate to be pessimistic BUT that is NOT good!!! If it has happened more than a few times (which it probably has given the nature of these trucks), that engine is a time bomb. Hope you have a nest egg of about $4-5G's sitting in the bank for a rainy day cause there are definately clouds in the sky, if you get my drift. I think he only owned it for a few weeks and I am betting he knows more about its true condition than he is letting on. Of course, if you picked it up in the $4-5,000 range (?), you might be able to recoup your money should it not be what you envisioned. All the best over there.

Congrats! If I would've had my Sy sold, I would've bought it.

Mind if I ask what you paid for it?

6 months in and around Balad was enough for me.

Only 6 months??? You were fortunate.

Depends on your perspective. Some peeps sat on base for a year and called it good. I was off base most days looking for bad guys. Makes for a long 6 months.

Re: just bought the red sy from austin texas

I paid $7500. Supposebly it was rebuilt 4000 or 5000 miles ago but after I see how it runs I will decide what to do next. I might just break it all back down and go over it again instead of wasting time tuning just to have it blow up. It's not a daily driver but traveling all the time makes it hard to get any project done.

Re: just bought the red sy from austin texas

if i can offer any suggestions it would be to loose the KB chips, and the JS knock retard system. Both are known to have many problems and cause more engine failures then all other chips combined.

The 7th injector idea is also a POS. Throw that puppy away and get some 50# injectors, which are suitable for the 60-1. Custom burned chips are available which are also calibrated on a 3 bar map sensor, so your computer will now be capable of reading past 14.7psi. Whereas now, at 18psi your computer thinks its only making 14psi. With these chips, you can run the stock knock retard system (the J&S was only used with KB parts b/c he dissabled the stock knock retard for whatever reason; guess you can make more money by selling two crappy parts then one good part)

anyways, those are just a couple things to consider before its too late and your motor goes kaboom before you know it..

Re: just bought the red sy from austin texas

I actually read some stuff on the kb chips and k/i and all i have heard is crap. I just bought the tuning set up and tune up kit through detroit turbo. The ostrich, G1 chips, 3 bar map sensor and cables so when I get home I will get a reading from datamaster and post so I can get some help. I haven't seen but the other guy said the 7th injector isnt even hooked up so it will probably stay that way. Thanks.
