Well, I finally went ahead and tore down the block that came out of "the duck"

Well unfortunately the crank is a lost cause. For those who dont remember, I bought the truck non-running cause the mechanic who worked on the truck dropped something in the manifold which in turn took out the #2 piston and cylinder, the head was already removed when I bought it.

So figuring all the damage would be in the front of the motor (I was right) I started with the #2 rod. Upon removing the cap and inspecting the bearing, it looked a little more worn than i would have liked but I wasnt totally disappointed.

On to #1, this is what hurts. After removing the cap, first thing i see that the bearing is spun. So now after shoving the rod out of the way, I was able to remove the bearing only to see extreme and uneven wear.

So i go back to stamping the rest of the rods and removing them one by one.

#3, 5 & 6 all seem to be in fine shape, showing your normal 90K miles of wear.

#4 looks friggin brand new. The bearing isnt even discolored and there is no wear on the journal, figures right?

So now onto the mains.....

Pop the rear main seal then crack all the caps loose. I started with the center and removed the rear. All seem to be in fair shape so I go and remove the front. Hey, guess what the front main has something in common with #1 rod journal....ITS SCREWED! The front main is actually the worst out of everything, its like a friggin valley in that journal.

Oh well, so thats basically gonna go for a toss into the scrap pile.

I am picking up another 4.3 motor, but its a 2nd gen motor and in a previous thread I made last week was told to be cautious of the newer cranks, so I guess I have to hunt a new one out now........ :(

I also just tore down a spare motor that I had purchased to build. I was told the motor was a 57k motor and it looks like it has even less. I was amazed how clean it was internally. Still seeing cross hatching in the cylinder walls, no ridge, pistons have no build up.
Anyway since I'm going to do a complete perf build-up I'm only going to be using the block, intake and brackets (to polish). This leaves just about everything else crank, rods, pistons, heads complete, pushrods, lifters, cam, fpr, injectors, throttle body, accys, wiring harness, ecm, etc. I have the upper ic, but the turbo is coked and wg was wasted in shipping so will need to be rebuilt.
I will probably just sell off these parts if you are interested. I have not listed anything yet, just figured I'd mention it after reading about your motor.

thanks man, ill keep it in mind.

right now im trying to track down the TRUE part number for the 2003+ 4.3L cranks which are supposedly nodular steel w/ rolled fillets.

there are TONS of crank part numbers it seems, none of which have a true origin. I currently 6 different crank part numbers, 2 of which are "supposedly" SyTy cranks, which only makes me wonder how many other crank numbers are out there.

I wonder if I could actually get everyone to post their cranks part numbers on here from previously disassembled SyTy motors and 4.3L's.

I would be nice to have an actual list of 4.3L cranks and what they came out of, whats good, bad, ect.

There isnt one on the net, thats for sure....

Yeah, this would be very helpful for those looking for cranks. I can get the number to my crank soon.

sounds good, should be a large 8 digit number

anyone else care to contribute?

also include what year model VIN, anything that will help put these in order.

Just out of curiosity have you called a GM dealer to get a part number?!?!?

I will dig around and see what I can find.....Is there a particular 4.3 that you want from 2003+ ?!?! Like from a silverado, or S10, or Blazer, or anything like that?!?!?

It shows the following:
262 4.3 1985-0000 1174N
262 4.3 1986-1990 14088640 & 10105865

Anyone know anything about the 1985 crank besides being a two piece? Does the N stand for anything? Nodular????

cool, thanks for the info. that opened a doorway to a lot of other information.

Seeing that the 1174N crank was only made for one year, which I didnt think the 4.3L even existed till 1986, but being they they only used it for one year, I would have to assume its not the best thing out there.

also noted, that it seems the "part number" thats cast on the cranks also houses the casting number, unless the whole thing is a casting number, but either way, it seems the 640, 480, 865 were used from 1987-1993, so maybe that will help a little for those looking for used stock cranks. It doesnt seem the SyTy crank is anything special.

When I pulled my current crank from the junkyard someone came up to me and asked if the truck I was pulling the crankshaft out of was a 1985 truck. I said no but asked him why and he said that the 85 crank was the strongest 4.3 crank GM made. I was just trying to see if this was accurate or just junkyard wisdom.

I recectly used a stock 85 crank in my bowtie block and it has held up just fine. I can only imagine it's crankin at least 500-650hp.
