Knock Sensor ?

Well this is a long and complicated question about an idea i have (may have already been done but couldent find by searching), so i wont make a huge post, but i need opinions/help from someone who knows a bit about knock sensors/meter's/gauges, and how they function. if you are interested in hearing my idea and helping out with my question please pm me and i will give you all the details.
TIA
Dan

Re: Knock Sensor ?

want to make a knock meter with 5 led's to indicate the level of knock. not sure first off what pin on ecm is for knock sensor. need to know if knock sensor is a 0-1 volt or 0-5 volt sensor. also what i was wondering is would it work to wire the led's in series with resistors between them. if so what size resistors would work. and last but not least, if using 5 led's wired in sereis with resisitors wont work what will. i seen the write up on a knock led with one led, but i would like to use 5 to show how much knock is present.

Re: Knock Sensor ?

not sure how a multi-led setup will pan out but I am currently trying to create an audible indicator to go with the single led setup . coming off the sensor itself doesnt filter anything like the esc chip does , and lots of led's may drain power from the stock prom which isnt desired either .

Re: Knock Sensor ?

yeah, i can just do the single led one for now, just thought a multi led setup similar to the msd would be a fun project. i know it has been well debated before i seen those two posts from a year ago, but dident see anybody get to any final conclusions about how it could be done.

Re: Knock Sensor ?

I was considering some of this features on a KR monitor to tune the progresive alki injection with real on the fly adjustments, i did some research and wrote some people and they lead me to Caspers Electronics. https://www.casperselectronics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PLST There is a gradual knock monitor and a gradual audible knock detector that can be added to the monitor. I wrote them asking if i could use those two gadjets for GN on my Sy and this is what they answered:
The grand national uses a separate ESC module, where the SY TY has the module integrated into the ECM. To get the gauge to work, you would need a separate ESC module and harness. I was able to modify the harness with a resistor so that the factory knock sensor would interface with the external ESC module.

I'm very electronics illiterate and didn't make much sense out of what he told me but may be you guys can and would be kind enough to let me know how easy this can be done and give me some tips that you might come up with.

Thanks & Good Luck.

Re: Knock Sensor ?

ask him if you can interface that gauge with the stock esc if hardwired into it . I have seen that before and liked it , but havent seen or heard about anyone trying it . I have heard mixed reviews about the caspers unit but without actually seeing and using it , its hard to base a personal opinion .

You could easily put a syclone sticker over the gn logo though .

Re: Knock Sensor ?

Here is the question.......do we know if it's (frequency...or...Voltage) I belive it's frequency!!!

If so you need a frequency to voltage converter....... BUT WHAT IS THE FREEQUENCY RANGE OF THE ESC OUTPUT?

Re: Knock Sensor ?

the knock sensor is an accelerometer so if i understand correctly, (which i probly dont) its an erratic ac voltage signal that is converted to a frequincy by the esc i believe (correct me if i am wrong). i found this thread http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=54276 while searching and it has a lot of info on knock sensors but again no explanination on how it could be achieved using more than one led to show the driver stages of knock

Re: Knock Sensor ?

"They are contantly putting out a nasty waveform, but the spikes become much larger when knock occurs."

this has to be frequency......

Re: Knock Sensor ?

This is what i found out, it doesnt have to do a thing with current or voltage but it would be nice if we could just bolt these on:

Actually it’s pretty simple. We put a 10K resistor in the blue feed wire that goes to the ESC module (the one that attaches to the knock sensor on the engine) and it pretty much works normally. I can fit the resistor into the wire on the harness we make, to do it simply.

Will this help? Of course they aint gonna tell me how it works...

Thanks.
