L35 rods in a stock engine? What's the real story?

Jeff Scott was kind enough to sell me some stock rods and pistons for cheap. After I took a close look at them, I realized the rods were L35 rods. I called Jeff to catch up on the history of the rods, and the only history is that they were pulled from a stock 92 Typhoon that died from a fire, apparently 90K miles with no rebuilds.

So, what gives? Do I not know what an L35 rod looks like? Did the factory slip some L35 rods into the stock engines? Did they slip some L35 rods into a factory replacement?

Here are some pics. The rod+piston on the left is from the set Jeff sent me. The rod humping it (in the first pic) is an L35 rod I got from Jim Sloan. The rod+piston on the right is from a factory replacement engine from my Typhoon.

Thanks in advance for the clarifications.

Pistons came from 92 ty #1414 from LA area. Tadd Williams is the former owner.

Had 84k miles, block is sitting in my garage, awaiting the big build. Stock bore, stock truck for most part.

I am no rod expert, but I do know those were installed factory.

L-35 Rods

L-35 Rods

I just looked at my old Rods and I guess they R L-35's from the picts. But then that's not surprising since I have a late '93, and I heard they went to the L-35's at sometime in '93. But then it appears that there may have been some in late '92 also ? It may have been a gradual phase-in kinda thing.

Anyone needs some L-35's cheap, I have 4-5 left. They do look thicker and stronger and have a wider big end than the pathetic stockers..

This is news to me. I'd like to hear some others who have experience with L35 rods pipe up to verify this.

Thanks for the posts guys.

Methuselah (wonder if Ur as old as me ?) -

I'm not sure about the Rods, but had heard that that was true on the heads, and my heads matched some L-35 description given on the List.

When I saw these pics and looked @ my Rods and they matched there also, I just assumed that the same was true of the rods also.

In case you've missed it the last 50 times it was posted, there has been no proof of L35 heads stock on any SyTy.

Supposedly L35 heads have an extra sensor bung that the regular LB4 heads don't have. Everyone was using this extra hole to determine whether or not they had L35 heads. Well, someone actually took these "L35 heads" off, and they're LB4 heads internally, but for some reason they have the extra L35 sensor bung. Which makes a lot more sense than one batch of Typhoons having them, without any other changes. If you actually do have L35 heads (not just with the extra sensor bung), I'm sure the tuning experts and the historians around here would love the details.

Rods I could believe. They don't require any other changes, or affect performance at all do they? Other than being stronger, of course.

So, how would U know whether they were L-35 heads ? Mine R at Conleys' if anyone wants to check them out.

Code what?
Lynn, What kinda work are you having Conley's do to your L35's? I've asked them about their work they have done on the Vortec conversions, and they want way to much. And they even have the job done the half ass way by doublestacking gasket's to fit. Just curious if they can have nice head work done. As far as the Vortec's, Renz is going to hook me up with the work on the lower manifold. Dunno if im going to have Conley's do some porting, or just leave em stock. I cant get anything done untill i get the time to package up Seth's parts, by the way i have tuesday off and your parts will get packaged up.

I wouldnt doubt that their are a few Syclones and Typhoons out there with a L35 package from the factory, who know's. When did the L35's come into production exactly? If some 92 Ty's have them stock, thats odd considering i thought they began to be installed in 94.

You missed a chance to save one extra keystroke with a "2", and another three with "ne1".

I know jack about heads. The L35s and LB4s are different internally though. The extra sensor bung is proven not to be an accurate way to tell whether or not you have L35s (which a stock truck shouldn't). Someone posted pics of the "L35" heads next to regular LB4 heads. The exteriors were different, but the interiors were the same. The only way to know for sure if you have non-standard, non-LB4 heads is to take them off the engine and look at them (though I'm not sure exactly what to look for).

Bill,

Yes, I compared my old heads briefly w the new Vortecs and at least on the exhaust side I couldn't tell the difference. But on the Rods, from the pics shown, the block on the end of my old ones definitely looks like the L-35 ones shown.
