LED's in license plate light housing?

when im bored at work i start coming up with all kinds of crazy ideas for shit... so let me run this one by you guys...

would it be possible to take the license plate light housing and turn it around so it aims behind you. toss in some "ultra bright" tiny LED's and wire em up to the back up lights? haha im sure this probably pointless... but i cant see shit out the back window of my sy when im trying to back up at night and thought a lil extra light wouldnt hurt, and it would look a helluva lot cleaner than having a big ass fog light hangin down below the bumper... think there are any LED's bright enough and small enough to pull this off?

There are LEDs out there that will damn near blind you. Go to DigiKey, Mouse, etc., one of those electrical component supply places, and search for super white LED. All of the specs on them are listed. Many are in the 3-4volt range, so you'd either have to build up a small board with a simple voltage divider circuit on it, or use a potentiometer to get the correct voltage from our 12v battery.

there are definitely bright enough led's... what're you going to do for lighting up the plate though? .... Haha, I just had the wacky thought that you should get speedhut to replicate your plate so it glows like the gauges (boy am I :screwy: this morning  ). Or you could have 1led stick out the other side to light the plate

I'd first try getting some led bulbs to replace the OEM lamps in your tails, they usually help quite a bit...

haha, that's not fair... We have some of the most lenient equipment laws in the world here, but I know for a fact that will get you pulled over at least, if not ticketed... so will only having a rear plate

I would, but I don't paticularly like having high risk insurance for silly violations... try to keep my record clean. I have no problem though my truck hasn't moved in years

I have had an excellent experience with Chris and Tracy at Auto Lumination. I have replaced just about every bulb in my Yukon to LED, including the license plate lights. LED's are bright enough. They have a ton of different styles for any application. Here is the website if you want to check it out.

here in CA those arent moving violations and dont raise your insurance no matter how many tickets you get.. i lost count how many window tint tickets i've gotten. Luckily my friends brothers friend is a cop and signs em off for me, so its not a big deal. I'll tell ya though once you've had limo tint on the front sides... its impossible to go back.

It would be great to make them so bright that you can't read the plate. All you can see is a bright white reflection. Maybe that's just the criminal in me though.

It'd help if they were pointed at the plate  ... You could just have a cop blinding switch to flash whomever is tailling you ... and I'm 100% sure thats illegal :rotf:

Not a dumb idea at all....Do you think SpeedHut could do that to handle weather conditions and all, or do you think it would have to be for show only.....I live inCo and our plates are all green with white and personly think it would look sweet if done right.... :2cents:

They'd have to coat it in silicone or something, and add it a backing plate to it, but ti could be weatherproofed

I agree 100%. I've had my windows blacked-out for a little over 2 years now and it's one of the best small upgrades I've done. It didn't cost but about $75 and it totally changes the look of the truck. And I know what you mean about not being able to see anything out the back window at night. I have this thing about backing into every parking spot and it's really difficult at night. I haven't hit anything yet thought so I must be doin ok.

Re: LED's in license plate light housing?

well it comes in handy during the day when youre driving if the sun is cookin the side of your face (im sorry but the visor doesnt do shit!) and its also good at night when you get that prick behind ya in the lifted truck who didnt aim his head lights down. It also cuts the glare of headlights when youre trying to make a turn and need to look at oncoming traffic....

as for the "speedhut license plate" dont wanna shit in your corn flakes but im not sure about that idea... im sure theres a way you could get it to work... But do you really want to attract that much attention to your truck? I know i don't, as much as i hate my trucks, i dont want them stolen or broken into.
