im standin in line at pep boys, and see the new truckin mag. on the top, it says Lightning vs SS showdown!!! so i crack it open at start lookin at the the article... typical truckin mag bullshit talkin about whats inside the cab rather than whats under the hood... at the end of the article it shows the 1/4mi stats... they said the lightning ran 14.6@98mph and the SS ran something like a 16.1@89mph????? whos driving these trucks for this mag?????

PC loadletter, what the fuck does PC loadletter meen.

thats what the dude driving the SS was thinking.

Just got my issue in today, was alittle pissed when reading it. Wrote a letter to the editior, if im lucky, hopefully Ill get into readers rap. This is what I wrote....
How are you,
I was looking through my new August 2003 Truckin Magazine and I noticed an article about the Silverado SS vs Lightning Shootout. When describing the
performance specs(pg 99) of the Lightning I noticed it was said, " The
powerplant helped propel the vehicle to 60MPH in a very quick 7.6
seconds-faster than any production truck of its time. Since 1993, the
Lightning has enjoyed a great amount of success, and literally no
competition,.....". This statement is untrue and unfair. While most are
not familiar with GMC's 1991 Syclone, it was, and is still, the quickest
production truck ever. The syclone is a AWD, 4.3L V6, Turbocharged and
intercooled pickup truck. According to GM advertising, it states 0-60MPH
times of 4.6 seconds, which is faster than the lightnings 6.3 seconds. Also
1/4 mile time for the Syclone were stated at 13.4 seconds stock, while the
Lightning runs a 14.6 second. On top of these impressive numbers, the
Syclone also uses technology that is over 12years old. Hope I did inform
some people on some old forgotten american muscle.

i thought the new L's were running 13.8 stock? if im wrong and they only run a 14.6; why would any good running syclone need to worry about losing to a truck that runs a second slower? unless it's modded.

they said SINCE 1993, those magazines only talk about vehicles still in production. They will never give two thoughts about our trucks. Lightnings run a hell of a lot faster than 14.6, that driver must have had Miss Daisy in there

Most of GM's "sport" model vehicles are nothing more than special trim packages to make them look fast.

Case in point: eXtremes

my friend with the 02 ran 13.9 stock, 13.5 with chip and cold air, 12.9 with pully, new chip, slicks, trac bars, no bed cover no tailgait. and also ran so 13.4 in the same day, the truck is now starting to ping, and just blew its second tranny, it only has like 15, 20K miles on it and it looks like it is dieing.

That's why they're all selling real cheap around here. Even in Ford dealer you can find 00' L for less than $20K.

Would that happen to be Paul. The guy in LS who has the reputation for picking on anything that has wheels? :D

Norm you hit the nail on the head. Now remember he beat you realy good, and even at higher speeds he would have stayed with you.

You should hear his stories about how he ran a viper, said he got it off the line (it wasnt pealing bad) 2 cars, and was in front all the way tell 130mph.

I dont know about him sometimes

Ive seen a LOT of the new fords run. I have yet to see one that runs faster than 14.1 stock..

Hell I can get on the brakes after the 18th mile and still run one into the ground.

My '99 L ran 13.70 @ 99.8mph stock w/ 700 miles on the odometer. I swapped the stock air box for an open K&N and went 13.3's at 102mph(in colder temps), then did a 2-3# boost pulley and further improved my times(in sig). Still no chip either.

I think many of these ET's have alot to do with the driver. Guys are spinning the tires off the line too much. I've managed mostly 1.9 60's with a couple 1.8's on the stock tires.

I guess I should mention that these are all on 95-102* temps here in Texas. I guess in colder weather they could break into the 13's I just havent seen it.

See sig for a halfway decent pass w/ a bone stock L.

Something else that came to mind reading that article, it's a Truck magazine.. I mean how often do these guys test true performance vehicles?

Since they usually deal with style instead of performance, it goes to reason they wouldn't know how to properly launch a vehicle if their lives depended on it!
