Looking at a Syclone

Hello fellas,

Im looking at picking up a 91 syclone. The owner wants 13k for it and it has about 77,000 mile on it. He says he's the second owner and the truck has new front brakes, new ball joints, new battery, new alternator, and rebuilt front driveshaft, new tonneau cover. The upgrades are a kenwood CD player, with stock as well, and a Todd Austinson 10 in 1 Chip.

Is this a good deal? It would be my dd and I am looking to do some mods down the road, both to improve the trucks reliability and to have some fun at the track once in a while.

And could someone tell me more about that chip?

That is interesting. Anyway, if it is in real nice condition inside / out and runs great, show him $12,000 if you are serious and enjoy the Syclone after he accepts your offer. For a 16 y.o. truck, 2 owners is not bad at all and I don't see these kind of trucks staying cheap much longer. You could also post pics for us to give you a better idea on the pricing. My advice is based on an excellent example. All the best in whatever you decide.

To me it seems a bit hight too but not too far off. I would offer $12,000 like the other guy said.

I just bought a mint Sy with 39K miles for $15,500 myself and the reliability mods are done. I think I got a fair deal....nothing great but fair.

Good luck!

I have a Sy with a 47k that has two serious buyers looking at buying. My asking price was $14,000....now lowered to $13,000. CLean CARFAX. FYI.

Re: Looking at a Syclone

Miles sound high. I bought mine for 10k with 59kmiles, completely stock, but it needed lots of TLC. With all the reliablilty mods completed, new brakes and a plethra of other new stuff, I've probably dumped 3 grand easy. Now it's a sweet truck that I'm not scared to drive more than a mile from my house though. Plan on spending some cash for whatever truck you decide ..cause that's a given. You're going to wanna know things have been done properely and their's only one way to do that...yourself. The guy I bought from firsts name Jerry, last name Rigger. The stereo install was laughable. 12k sounds decent for a clean and good running truck. However, if you plan on doing a bunch of mods I would look for something else with higher miles at a cheaper price...they are out there. :2cents:

I'd actually buy from a member on syty, at least you can get some real history of the beast. Wish I knew before buying mine.

Re: Looking at a Syclone

Thanks for all the replies guys,

To clear up a few things, I am actually not really going to buy it for 13k, but rather work out a trade for my current car ( a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V turbo) Thew car has well over 7k in mods and I figure is worth close to 13k. I offerd him a trade and he and I are both thinking about it. Without the mods my car stock is worth 8-10 thousand. So I figure for 3k more for the mods I have, the deal is pretty fair. If anyone on this forum is intrested in a trade I can e-mail pics of my car to them, it has 65,000 miles on it. I would really love to get a Ty over a Sy just for the added space.

Re: Looking at a Syclone

yes i ran a crappy 14.9 at 101mph with an almost 3 second 60 foot. I beat a turbo integra on the street that ran a 13.3 tho so i figure i could run mid 13s if i had drag radials. My car dynoed 285 whp... I really just want awd, I'm just looking to see whats out there, I've always wanted a SyTy, so I thought I'd look into them.

Just make sure you have another vehicle. Not just the SY/TY. Where do you live?

Re: Looking at a Syclone

I live in central Ohio, but yes I was planning on using it as my only car. Thats why I was trading for it. Do they really break that often? I work on my car when needed, but am I going to have to worry about blowing her up with just using it everyday? I would think the 4.3 is pretty tough as long as I dont get boost happy.

Re: Looking at a Syclone

It's not that they break often but...Drive it like a race car and you'll spend a lot of time in the pits. Be nice and it'll treat you the same. But driving nice is real, real hard when you've got a SYTY. I can't say I've ever driven mine without stomping on it at least once. And when some chump rolls up in his rice tuner or mustang, well, everyone here knows what happens next. Buy a $1000 four door civic commuter and drive it until the wheels fall off and keep the SY on standby. You'll save enough money in gas in one year to pay for the civic. Food for thought anyways.

This thread makes me laugh....I actually bought this SY...Paid 11k for it. It might be the cleanest 77k mile truck Ive seen...the guy was alittle fullof shit though about the brakes and front end parts. The propshaft was rebuilt though. All in all, its super clean...super straight body with not one ding..check it out...

Re: Looking at a Syclone

Syty's are worth more now than what the average buyer wants to pay for a 17 year old vehicle . Eventually the world will be forced to pay up , but for now the current owners are why our market is so soft .

In future years when all sytys have even more miles with even more blemishes , it will cost you more to buy a ratty one than what everyone buys nicer ones for today .

I know, I love the stock wheels....just wish that they were 18" or 17" even....but lets remember that 16" was big in 91...hahaha

Re: Looking at a Syclone

NICE TRUCK , great deal. I paid $13k for my truck 2 years ago with 63k miles. The stock ones are what bring in the cash... too bad I am about to mod mine ;) ... its always nice to start with a "plain canvas" atleast ---
