Be sure to check your intermediate steering shaft. There's a rubber flange in the shaft that wears out very easily and causes sloppy steering. When I was trying to get mine to be a little less scary at speed, the intermediate shaft made the biggest difference on my 110K mile Ty. JWaller had a custom shaft made that I think would go a long way toward improving steering.
As far as the clunking, I had a loose shock up front that would clunk sometimes when going over bumps. I also had bad front differential mounts which would clunk during low speed turns, and bad torsion bar mounts which would also clunk when turning, and worn sway bar bushings gave me some clunking as well. Good luck.
