Lost to GC-SRT-8

Spotted a GC SRT-8 in traffic on my way home from visiting the wife at work this afternoon. I cught up to the guy and right away he gets on it. I was with a friend of mine and he was saying how funny it is that noone ever wants to race me but this guy was in it before I even got next to him. Bad part about this story is, and this is not a lie, my trans is butter, its to the point where its slipping under normal driving in pretty much all gears after warming up. Its really getting pathetic. So we play a little bit here and there and everytime we got on it it didnt seem like he was pulling away from me. Traffic ahead of us cleared up pretty good and we tried to catch a light but after about a mile or two no luck what so ever. We catch a light behind other cars and talked for a bit. He asked me what motor and I told him a Turbo V6. He gave me a yeah right look and I invited him to count the plug wires. So he tells me his is 350hp and tell him its actually 425 and hes like oh really?! The guy was cool though. He stated he was pissed we couldnt catch a light. So were driving again and we get around the pother cars and I have one more light to go to before I had to turn and told my friend that if we didnt catch it Ild race him from a roll. Basically my trans was @ 250* all day and I had been driving normal so you can see my point Im sure. I was just trying to save what she had left for a launch. So we get to the light and both slowed waay down in effort to make it go red but no go. After we get back up to 45mph, he stabs it and it was funny cause it seemed like we both did at the same time. It wasnt til 85mph that he started to pull on me and it was just very little, I could hear my trans telling me to knock it off screaming at 5000rpm and giving me some tach flutter but I stayed in it as long as I could. We caught the next light where I was turning and he gave me a thumbs up. I didnt even bother telling him about the trans cause I didnt think it made much a difference. He told me he had to flip a bitch cause he is supposed to meet some chick at a bar about 4 miles back. Ive done that countless times. Cool guy, cant wait to race another one when my trans gets fixed. BTW, after that fiasco, I had trouble taking off from lights and now it slip real bad. :(

Hmm wonder how youd do with an ultimate chip and some 50lb injectors and some tunning, and of course a tranny rebuild.

Just dump some saw dust down your tranny fill tube and go get some more kills!!!

I had the Ultimate chip. Didnt like it. It was decent for performance but definately not made for this altitude. Power isint the problem right now. I have a fair tune at the moment but ofcourse there is always room for improvement. As far injectors go, I have plenty left. As soon as I finish a job Im working on Im getting an overhaul kit with some basic stuff, clutches, seals and what not and going to rebuild it again. I think I have two things wrong in this build from the get go. Possibly a torn seal (causing me to have no reverse) and a bad convertor. Temps have always been high in normal driving conditions and truck has been somewhat hesitant at times. Ive known since the day I put it in back in December that I was going to have to pull it back out sooner than later.

How would you know until you try? Jimmy has called his Waller tranny "bullet proof" and he drives just like you do. Plus if you add all of the $ spent in your tranny, you could've bought one of his, and not have to R&R it X number of times ( X > 3, right?)

And I've seen plenty of races between you two. Same outcome everytime

Yeah but by the time I go that route and go through two of those I couldve had a 4L80 swap which IMO is really the best thing for anyone with these trucks. And trust me, the thoguht crosses my mind constantly. I found a core 80 here in town for $750 :crazyeye: Funny part is that thats with a $350 core charge. It has 33K on it so maybe its good enough to slap in and call it a day. I dont know how I woulod afford it but I think Ill be pieceing it all together here soon a little bit at a time. And even if I couldnt break it, what fun is it to have someone esle do my dirty work? I just enjoy it. Hell, Ild pay some oen for the R&R before I paid someoen to build it. Just me though.

Do some shopping on Car-Part.com. And don't be afraid to ship something to your location. And the core charge is BS, find somebody else to buy from.

As an example, I bought a LQ4 6.0L V8 and matching 4L80E last April. Both were out of a 2004 26,000mile Silverado 2500. Paid $1200 for the complete motor, $800 for the trans (complete with stock converter). Shipping cost me $140 plus $50 to crate it (total for both). That was to ship from Rhode Island to Maryland, because MD yards seem to be ridiculous expensive. At the time, I check local yards, and they wanted $2500 for just the motor (and least mileage was 75k). Needless to say, I don't buy much at local yards. That motor and trans went into my Bravada without any changes and run good.

No offense, but with the power you are planning to make (if I understand your intentions correctly) a 4L80 isn't needed. A good build on a 4L60 will be just as good as a stock 4L80.

If you say so, I think a GT35R maybe even a GT40R absolutely justifies it. Either way the 700 is a POS for the most part and Im sick of it. Why spend thousands on something in after market to be the best it can be when you can just throw in something stockish thatll practically out-do the other? You'll never talk me into it. My friend yesturday was trying to get me to have it built also but I refuse. Just doesnt make sense to me. Besides, the other trannies I had I did minimal build s with them and it took each one two years to fall apart.

Re: Lost to GC-SRT-8

The biggest problem with the 80E is you just can't throw it in stock.

As I'm sure you're aware, the tcase needs a 27 spline output shaft and the 80E has a 32 spline. Which means you've got to change output shafts. And to do that, you've got to take the entire trans apart (output shaft is about the first thing in the case, and it all loads from the bellhousing end). If you've got the whole trans apart, you ought to at least freshen it up (seals, clutches, etc). And at a minimum you're going to need to do seals and such that get messed up taking it apart.

That, and the electronic controls required to run the trans drive the cost up significantly. Its not for the faint of pocketbook.
