Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

I know you said that the e-dist is discontinued.. did "FAST" make it then?

What else would I need to make the conversion... if it's possible I want to do this while I've got the wife's Typhoon apart this winter along with all the other fabrication I'm doing.

Please post or e-mail me if you could.. I'd really appreciate it!

THANKS!!!!
You need a EDIST universal harness, an optical trigger, coil packs, plug wires & a MSD wire harness.
I believe the ingredients are on the first page of this post.

You need a EDIST universal harness,

Looking at the wiring diagram that harness would be cake to make.. Then you could make everything the correct length and all.. The rest of the stuff is relatively easy to acquire.. I don't think a MSD box is needed.

If we can just figure out if the EDIST is really a GM part and get the part number that would really make things easy.. I missed an EDIST on egay a few weeks ago.. It went for $99 + ~$13 for shipping.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

I've got all of my crap gathered/ordered. Probably get around to it this weekend after the fuel pump.

I'll try and put together a walk through if I remember.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

This entire post started back in 2006.

I'm sure some things have changed and have found easier better ways to go about it.

The dist./cap setup and wiring. Coils and plug wires/brackets are the cake walk.

Have any of the parts from the first page changed then? (cap/wiring ect)

Thanks... just like to get the stuff I need and the wiring started on the right foot.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

Nothing has changed that drastically. The diagram protosy made up works but two optical triggers I got from crane didn't work. I gave up and made my own. It looks like we now have options for the edist so you aren't out of luck. There isn't that much to it other than wiring it up and modifying the brackets to fit on the side of the motor and then creating brackets to mount the whole assembly to the engine.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

Could you post what the inside of your cap/rotor area looks like? I know the newer flat type (98) factory 4.3L dist. have a internal cam sensor but not sure if it's what we need for a signal.

I think I'm only worried about the cap/rotor setup at this point.
Who do I contact for the e-dist now? I've got the pn#'s and stuff printed and wire diagram.
It said early in the post that Casper's did the harness for him... I'll call John Spina and see if he remembers doing that.
Thanks again for the help,
Scott~

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

My distributor isn't factory since the stock one broke but all you really need is the ignition module and the magnetic inductor inside. Any electronic distributor is going to have this. If it does in fact have a cam sensor built in then you shouldn't have to worry about the optical trigger.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

The 98ish dist. only have the cam sensor reluctor wheel inside.. no module or 6pt magnetic setup.

Pic's of the inside of your stock dist. cap would be awsome when you have time.
Thanks for the help,
Scott

How about you take a pic of yours and I'll tell you if it will work. My truck isn't very accessible right now.

Does the 98 have the sensor mount on the crank? My 03 does.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

The 98 does have a crankshaft sensor with 3 long raised parts on it where the sensor pick's up.

Under the rotor there's another sensor but I didn't take notice to how it triggerd. I'm sure it can be modded to just pick up #1 easy. 3wire coming out of the dist. But no module under there like our stock one does in the Sy/Ty's.

Did you use the stock rotor to trigger the sensor sy2207?
Thanks,Scott~

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

Yes. I used the stock rotor to trigger the optical trigger. The only thing I did differently was I pulled the brass portion out farther from the plastic housing making the rotor swing in a larger circle. I did this because I wanted to be sure the optical trigger was fully covered.
