I recently (this past week) replaced my destroyed turbo with a mint stock replacement, while doing so i replaced my 160 thermostat with a 180. I went for a test drive today and noticed major knock at around 10psi that i never had previously. should i put the 160 back in there? HELP!!

why'd you change it to 180? Try putting the 160 back in and see if the knock goes away. That would be the easiest place to start.

Stab it and steer it
Re: Major knock, please help!!

Can you tell us a bit more. What RPM? What throttle? By what throttle I mean can you sorta control the knock with throttle? (Make it worse or make almost go away.) Is the knock apparent in gear or in neutral? Cut open your oil filter and look for metal. Knock may be the flex plate and not the engine.

I can control it with throttle. It happens shortly after building boost in drive (boost launching). When it starts, if i reduce throttle it goes away, but as soon as i "get back into it" it starts again. It was never a problem until the newer turbo and 180 thermostat...

First off, what kind of knock are we talking about here? On a scan tool or like a rod knock sound? Maybe you got a bunk turbo.

The turbo is fine...lol. The type of knock i am referring to is detonation, i don't need or have a scan tool to tell me that's what it is. I have heard it many times before on previous vehicles. I also adjusted the wastegate rod shorter than it previously was.

Shorter would raise the boost and you could be knocking since the truck isnt tuned for that boost level or lack of god gas to support it.

Its a stock setup, so i assumed it should boost to the stock 13-14 psi i am only getting 9-10 psi. I use the best fuel i can get locally. I will readjust the wastegate rod back to the stock setting as soon as the truck cools down and start from there i guess

Dave is right. However, the t-stat shouldn't make you knock sine I have tuned several stock trucks bone stock with a 190*. The boost will though. You may be only getting what you said because the KR is cutting it down. You definitely need to get a scan tool. If you can hear the knock, its not good.

I adjusted the wastegate rod to the stock length and now my autometer boost gauge shows 5 psi but my stock one is pegged at 15. Where can i buy a working datamaster disc and cable, i have heard of people having trouble with auth - codes etc...

Buy it direct from TTS and you won't have any problems with the authorization code... it will be emailed to you within 24 hours.

Does your truck have a aftermarket chip in it? If so check that it is fully seated. I got 18 deg of knock, which was fake, because my chip became loose. I just removed it and reinstalled it and all was well again.

That looks like a stock chip to me. There are no extra labels on it anywhere?

Yep... Late Syclone svc campaign chip.

Adjust your WG rod such that almost all the pin shows through the eyelet in the WG rod.
You should have to move it very little against spring pressure to get it on the WG arm.

Make sure your WG arm moves freely when hot... a lot of them work ok cold, but sieze up when hot.

The fact that your aftermarket gauge and your stock one don't match might be a clue... where does your aftermarket gauge tap into?

I'd check the vacuum hoses around the fuel pressure regulator for cracks or breaks.

My gauge taps into the upper intake where the large brake booster hose attaches. I am going to pull the 180 stat today and reinstall the 160.

Let me know what kind of temps you run with the 160.... I've got a 160 in mine and I run 180 thru 200.
Thanks - Rob
