Manifold DAQ

I am trying to remove my driver side manifold and having an issue getting both the crossover flange and rear manifold past the steering shaft (at different points obviously). Do I have to remove either the steering shaft or the power steering bracket? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Manifold DAQ

if the manifold is installed correctly, you need to remove the power steering pump and bracket to remove the manifold. The frontmost bolt of the manifold holds that bracket on.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to remove the steering shaft (column is inside the truck). Its just 2 bolts holding it in and will give you more room. I usually remove the cruise control also, just becuase its one last thing to cut your hands on.

OK, thanks Mike! I will get on it see how it goes. Thanks again.

Re: Manifold DAQ

I can't get the power steering pulley off yet, and therefore nothing on the bracket, because of clearances. There is a significant amount of rust everywhere and the pulley's no exception but I can't even tell which way it is threaded, I have made so little progress in freeing it. The belt is off and I have a clamp on the pulley, but am nervous about bending it. Any suggestions?

Re: Manifold DAQ

Go get the proper power steering pulley remover before you make things worse.

Autozone will rent you one for free, or if your like me I would rather just have one in my tool box when I need it.

It will also install the pulley when your done.

Ok, I thought I would probably need a puller. I guess I was just post-poning the inevitable. How much do those cost... ballpark? I really appreciate the help, thanks!

Re: Manifold DAQ

I have been stuck on the drivers side manifold forever, and have many car part casualties to show for it. Most recently I did this with a two jaw puller on the power steering pump pulley:

I am now at this point and need some help.

I got the powersteering pulley off in one extremely bent piece, and removed all the bolts on the alternator bracket, except this one behind the powersteering pump reservoir. How the hell do you get to this?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Manifold DAQ

I believe you should have used the PS pulley remover and not the 2-jaw saw. You can rent one for a few bucks at the parts store. Instead of grabbing the outside of the pulley it grabs the small lip on that snout hanging out in the pics you posted. :2cents:

Re: Manifold DAQ

Thanks for the post! Sorry I didn't make that clear, but that is how I eventually got it off after striking out with a 2 and 3 jaw puller. And a brief rage out at the destruction of my pulley. I eventually figured out that there was a specific puller for the p/s pulley, rented it and got the pulley off.

Grind a 9/16" (or 14mm, I can't remember) boxed end wrench down to about half the original thickness and then bend it 90 degrees right at the end kinda like a boxed end crow's foot. Put it on the bolt from the front of the engine and then turn the wrench with a big something to break the bolt loose.

My truck came w/ a Snap On wrench so modified and it works great!!!

I was thinking about how to modify something like that, but wasn't sure of the size. I really appreciate the help. That should definitely do the trick. (I think you are right about it being a 9/16 by the way, but will let you know).

Thanks again,
Evans

Re: Manifold DAQ

you don't need to make a tool to get to it. Remove the 2 or 3 bolts holding the pump/resevoir in place...and you'll then have easy access to that bolt

Mr. Renz makes a good point as always (absolutely no sarcasm), however w/ my already modded wrench (it came w/ the Sy so I use it), I don't remove the pulley from the pump or the res. from the bracket. I pull the entire assembly by removing 1 bastard bolt and a few not so tuff ones. :2cents:

i figured you didn't remove the pulley to do that. Is your bolt modified to only thread in like 3 threads though? I would think that the bolt wouldn't back out enough to remove the bracket w/ the pump still installed on a "normal" truck

I don't think I like your tone Mr. Renz!

(insert liberal amounts of sarcasm here)

I take that bolt out last so the assembly moves away from the engine as the bolt comes out. Thus it makes it's own room to come out.

(end of sarcastic reply)

makes sense. I wonder how hard that bolt is to break free w/ the crows foot tool on a 100k mile truck thats never had that removed though. I'll have to try it next time i'm at the junkyard
