I'm finding it nearly impossible to match the paint on my sy. Theres a few pieces throughout the years that I can tell have been painted . and They match perfect. I'm trying to paint the fenders and hood and cant get the ****en paint to match to save my life. Have been back to the paint shop countless times to have them tweak the paint. It's either to dark or to light. Anyone have any suggestions?

And yes I'm painting it single stage, not base coat clear coat

Black is one of the hardest colors to match. But, some auto parts stores have a paint department that uses a special paint camera that analyzes the paint on your truck to mix you a perfect match paint. I know that O-Relly's in Oklahoma had one. Maybe if you give them a call. They can tell you what kind of camera it is or suggest a store in your area that has one.

I painted the hood on my truck many years ago. I used DuPont enamel with gloss additive. It matched perfect.

Re: Matching original black paint

The place I've been dealing with has the camera, but they said it won't work with this. I disagree. I've had another place use it to match yellow on one of my S10's and it matched perfectly. I also called the place that mixed yellow for me, and he said the camera won't really work.

photospecktrometers are not any better than a good eyes.i have seen them match perfect sometimes and way off on others.make sure you buff the old paint you are try to match against.sanding and buffing the new paint will change it too.color match is a bitch

Jims-sy, I know it may sound insane but start undoing it all. Just buy a gallon and get a complete paint job done correctly.

I use BC/CC PPG. I know there other stuff out there but I was told it was a close match.

I am painting front end part- fender? Hood? grille.... I just gave in and decided to paint the whole truck. I had a few people pass coments about stuff matching.

I ended up painting the entire truck too. Needed fenders and hood painted... more work to paint it, but matching 20+ year old faded black (GM wasn't known for good paint jobs in the early 90's anyways) wasn't easy!

Re: Matching original black paint

I buffed the truck when I got it 2 years ago. The paints in very good shape. I'm just painting the fenders, hood and grill.

I just got done repainting the whole cladding because it was original with scratches and what not. I knew it couldn't be matched so I bought a gallon of single stage mate black and went to town.
