Methanol, 2 ?

Sorry for a long post, but here it goes. My sweetheart tells me about this lady husband who died and has all this stuff in her garage that needs to be clean out. She wanted to know if I could look at it and tell if anything was worth holding on to as her sons were a couple of deadbeats and didn't want to help her out. One thing she ask me to haul off was a 5 gallon can of methanol. She told me her husband would add a quart to a full tank of gas to help the the vehicle pass the CA smog test. It made the vehicle pass with really low emissions on a retest, even if it fail 20 min before adding the methanol. Now the question, Can you safely add straight methanol to the gas tank? If so in what quantity? TIA.

Re: Methanol, 2 ?

"Dry methanol is very corrosive to some aluminum alloys, but additional water at 1% almost completely inhibits corrosion. It must be noted that methanol with additional water at more than 2% becomes corrosive again. The same happens with less than 1% water. Nitride and neoprene rubbers, generally satisfactory as elastomers in contact with methanol and polyacetal plastics, are very resistant. Silicon rubber as well as vinyl can be used for gasket material."

Methanol will kill a rubber hose by making it dry out and get "harder than the back of Superman's head"!!
It will also erode aluminum fittings and remove the anodized color from them
