Minimum temperature for TC lockup?

What is the minimum temperature for TC lockup? Is it the fluid temp? How does the tranny know when it reaches that temp?

I will assume that there must be some sort of temperature switch in the trans/VB. :dunno:

I know our trans are not electronically controlled, but you can change the tc lockup point in the chip tables, correct? How does that work?

Re: Minimum temperature for TC lockup?

It's all controlled by the ECM. The TCC Lockup is one of the only things our ECM knows about the transmission. I think it takes ~150*F Engine Coolant Temps before the stock chips lock up, but I'd have to check to be sure.

You can always tell because when you pull a cold truck out of the garage, drive it 50mph, when Datamaster hits about 150*F you can watch the tach drop 200-300 RPM and feel it lock.

The TCC lock tables in our chip are kind of lame, they are a Throttle % vs MPH. So basically as you go faster (MPH), the truck will require more throttle before it unlocks the converter (eventually reaching 70MPH where the converter will remain locked at WOT with 100% throttle.)

Re: Minimum temperature for TC lockup?

It is based on engine coolant temp as Tooky said, not tranny temp. Stock trucks have no clue of fluid temps. Now an 80e, well that is a different topic.

Re: Minimum temperature for TC lockup?

Josh is right on the temp, the transmission will lock up automatically provided the following conditions are met: vechicle speed over 24 MPH, engine at normal operation temperature (above 149 F), TPS output not changing indicating a steady road speed, brake switch closed and 3rd or 4th gears.

Re: Minimum temperature for TC lockup?

Thanks. I guess my shit is running too cool.I didn't hit tc lockup forever on the 12 mile way home last night, when I did it went in and out of lockup a few times.I have a 160 stat.

It was 30 something degrees out though.

Re: Minimum temperature for TC lockup?

I just put in a 160 degree thermo also when I replaced the whole cooling system, now it just doesnt idle correctly and most definatly runs too cold. I also am experiencing torqu converter issues. The truck does not launch as fast and I hear a sound that sound like something is slipping underneath. Does TCC refer to the torque converter? I thought I needed a new torque converter but it was fine before all the work and the 195 degree down to the 160. Coincedence??
Thanks

Re: Minimum temperature for TC lockup?

so if your engine temp sensor was tits then you might get poor performance from your trans and lockup? or does it default to lock up/remain open?

My engine coolant sensor was bad but I am now going 4L80....

i have the same problem Jimmy. i had to lower the temp for TCC lockup. my truck runs cold.
