Mobil 1 oil change intervals on a syty??

I've done alot of reading lately about synthetic motor oil compared to conventional motor oil. In ever test and comparison the sythetic oil is far superior, this most of us know. I've also read of vehicles going 20-25k miles between oil changes!! The vehicle operators are changing the oil filters every 3-5 k but not the oil itself. The theory is that the syntheic oil doesn't break down or loose any of it protective characteristics like conventional motor oil, so changing the oil isn't neccessary. Changing the filter (where all the dirt should be) alone is enough according to the articles I've read. I heard of some C5 corvette owners talk on the corvette forum about going 15k without changing the oil, I'm just a little skepitcal and wonder what other syty people are doing. Anyone going longer than 3k miles on your sythetic oil?

No
The big difference is that our oil gets heat cycled to the extreme. It is not worth the risk to expensive engine components to me .

The sythetic oil was heated to over 400 F and still didn't fail. I agree though costly repairs is was mosts me leary of trying to go more than 3k.

I bet the oil that is left in/around the turbo gets hotter than 400 upon shutdown. Probably not as bad on water cooled center section. I suppose tests in the lab would be the only real way to establish how viable the oil is at 3k.

A couple guys on the Subaru board took Mobil 1 to the lab at different intervals. I think everyone agreed that about 5000 - 7000 miles is safe. The oil was coming out of a stock WRX.

my new mini cooper S has castrol snycrap synthetic. they reccommend 10k between oil and filters. I will be changing 5k and using mobil 1.

i dont recommend going even 3000 with synthetic, i would say 2500 or less between oil changes, its just better for the truck.
I use penzoil 20 50 non-syn, i have to change it every uhh 350-450 miles never past 500 though, lol thats just me...

Why don't you use synthetic? With the heat these engines make I wouldn't use anything else. No matter how often you change it, conventional oil still breaks down under high temp., where synthetic is doesn't.
I guess the type of driving you do might also be important when answering my original question. If the truck spends most of its time on the track or getting the P*** beat out of it on the streets, I can see changing at a much more frequent interval. My truck is used more as a fun means of transportation. I would say that 90% of the miles I put on mine are on the freeway.
Would anyone out there be interested in trying to get some lab work done?? If we did it as a group it might be very affordable. If there is an interest I'll do the leg work and research if people are interested an willing to put a couple bucks in the hat. Might be interesting.

something id be interested in is finding out why mobil 1 doesnt make 20 50 syn, just 15 50, ionno, i need it.
True my truck sits most of the time and only is taken out to go to the races [street races] about once a week, maybe once to school [month], and a syty meet here and there, and very rarelyt goes to the actual track, except were talking NATS!
Honestly that what i had thought, syn would be a better choice for my app, but i was told different. My motor is, yes, a little different than stock but still the same factors come into play..heat etc. Well i was told by my builder, to use only penzoil, he claims, for his motors, this is better, and DYNO proven, but i do have to change the f*&K out of it, as far as performance, i have yet to try a syn in my truck, but compared to when it was stock i cant tell the difference, except i have to change it more frequently. like my grammer and spelling, haha sorry.

i work for a Merc-Benz dealer and they run mobil-1 in all 99-ups,and the service intervals are every 9-12k-the cars have a sensor that monitors the quality of the oil and indicates when it wants the oil changed.the car takes into account the passage of time also...waaaaaay too much crap in these cars...but thats what they do...
