I don't want to throw cold water on MSD Distributors, but I wrote the following thread back in early December...

I put in the msd billet about 200 miles ago. I had problems, now I rebuilding a motor.
I am not saying that the msd was the only problem but when we checked out a serious detonation problem that messed up a head gasket and some pistons (Motor still runs on 0 boost but smokes bad and other stuff),
the msd was showing (at crank) 10* more than my speed-pro at 1000 rpms, 12* more than the speed-pro at 2000 rpms and 15* more at 2500 rpms.
Unfortunately this happened some time after it was installed (checked with the crank timing) and became an issue one day at the track.
First and second run everything fine, third run at near WOT in third gear the truck fell on it face. I shut down, but of course it was to late. The msd was giving 20* plus whatever the speed-pro sent to the motor at WOT. Ouch..Sent the dist. back to msd, they think the magnet may have cracked causing irractic timing. Have not heard back yet on a final answer.
One of the reasons I switch back to the stock distributor was to see if if the speed-pro was the problem. I didn't want to put in a new motor and have the same problem so I back-tracked my mods since the motor was still runable. Changed to the stock dist. and the timing tracked with the speed-pro. I will stay with the stock in my new build.

Since I wrote the above MSD sent back to me a new distributor and when I tried to inquire about the problem, the answer was "You had a faulty pickup...can happen sometimes" I was hoping for something more satisfing so I could feel comfortable about using it again. I won't....cost me a motor rebuild.
