MSD wire issues

Hello all,

Bought a set of the custom fit wires that MSD makes for these trucks. Have to say I am not happy. I had Taylor 8mm wires on before. In matching the cylinders up i noticed only 3 of the 7 wires were even the same length. To make matters worse I found the MSD catalog with the measured lengths for each wire. only 4 of the 7 measured correctly to what was in the catalog. And the final straw was when i wired the truck up the lengths were so long in some places that it looks like crap. And i couldnt get the #6 boot on the plug becasue its too long and connects the downpipe, preventing it from snaping onto the plug tip.

I mean for 60.00 i expected something better. and i need to get my truck on the road again or i would fight it out with MSD over replacements.

has anyone else had this problem?

Re: MSD wire issues

I have never had any problem with the MSD fitting. I have a used a few sets and they are my favorites, though they are more expensive than the Taylor by quite a bit. My biggest complaint is they don't easily fit in the stock looms...

Re: MSD wire issues

on my stock ACDelco wires i bought, #6 was straight as well. I ordered Taylor wires from RPM, and all passenger side wires were good 3-4" shorter then the ACDelco ones, and #6 was a 45deg boot. They all fit pretty good. Maybe MSD models their wires after the ACDelco replacements, sure sounds like it. On my truck, #6 being straight and long it rested on the 3" downpipe and burned. The Taylors being 45deg and shorter, is now far away. I also bought the Taylor spaceage boot things, and ziptied the wires to the original brackets, all far far away now. As far as MSD stuff, I bought a billet distributor and was bad right out of the box, truck missfired and was blowing black smoke like crazy. I send it back, they replaced the pickup.

msd wires are junk!! the boots crack, and are made of too soft of a silicone. overpriced too.

Thats why I purchased RPM ones for stock heads and built my own for the brodix heads. Paul Z.

Re: MSD wire issues

Taylor wire made in the USA? I used to buy the Accel 8.8 and they're boots were good but they're made in China and I'm trying to support US companies as much as possible.

Re: MSD wire issues

I have had a set of taylors that had 2 bad wires out of the box

I only use the msd now, we have bought the bulk roll and terminals for it and made up our own before. All the straight boots that I have gotten from msd are called multi angle which means you can put a 45 degree bend in them if you need. Generally they only bend in one spot so just twist the wire around till you have the spot that bends easily.

Good luck.

Re: MSD wire issues

well i called MSD and they are going to send me out a new #6 wire. however it seems like the #6 wire is a problem for others. it does ned to have a 45 or 90 boot on it. the straight one is just too long, esp for a set suppose to be made for these trucks.

Its going on a new MSD drop-in distributor to replace the rusted stocker. hope it doesnt give me as much trouble as the wires have.

thanks everyone for the thoughts. never had a prob with MSD products till now. hope it doesnt continue with the dist. cuz that thing sucked to put in and looks like no fun to set the timing on.

the taylors I took off seem to fit the truck well. in hindsight I would have prob gone back to them had I known this would happen.

Re: MSD wire issues

FYI, MSD does make another 4.3 wire set 8.5mm. Description is (4) 90's, and (2) straights

i'm gonna orderup a set and see how they fit.

Re: MSD wire issues

thats what i had. 4 90 degree and 2 straights for the number 6 and the number 1 cyl.

still couldnt get the msd to fit right. the boot is just too long. by about 1/2" so I swaped out to one of my Taylors that was on before. fits perfectly.

Was not happy with what I got from MSD this time around. have the pro-billet dist too. hope that doesnt give me any trouble.

msd ignition parts work no doubt about it,but i do not like there wires, magnacores by far are the best.

Re: MSD wire issues

I got magnecor on one of my trucks. They fit great. Much like the original KB wires. Good materials. I been to their production place in Michigan before. Nice people and good products.
