The only thing you need to upgrade on the valve train in the springs. I just happen to have an extra set of the comp beehives you need. :)

$125 shipped to you if you want them.

Re: My budget LQ4/4L80E build!

Don't know if you know this or not, but the factory head bolts on the LSx motors are not re-useable. They are torque-to-yield, and need to be replaced anytime they are removed. Or you can upgrade to aftermarket fasteners which are re-useable.

There are a number of other non-reuseable fasteners on the LSx motor. For example, the balancer bolt is torque-to-yield and must be replaced if removed. And it's in there TIGHT, torque spec is 40 ft lbs plus 140 degrees.

Another fastener that might be worth replacing while you've got it apart is rod bolts. Gm's aren't the best, but for a mild rpm turbo motor should be ok. If you're going to spin it hard (say above 6k or so) I'd plan on replacing them.

Also, the truck manifold is significantly better than the LS1 manifold, and only slightly behind the LS6 manifold performance-wise. In my application (a 2nd gen S10, not a 1st gen), the heater core in/out ran directly into the back of the truck manifold, which is why I switched to the LS6. And IIRC the fuel purge solenoid (on the top front of the truck manifold) would have posed a hood interference problem (not 100% sure of that, it was 2 years ago).

I'd suggest checking out Jared @ Current Performance. He's got some nice bits and pieces to help the swap along.

Re: My budget LQ4/4L80E build!

i know about the head bolts. the heads wont be coming off so i dont have to worry about that. in my first post i said i will be using arp rod bolts.

i ordered a bung for my oil drain line for the turbo and the t-case adapter today from rpm. will post pics and update the total when the stuff comes in.

Re: My budget LQ4/4L80E build!

Are you planning on turboing it?

Now to the present. My goal at the end has always been to run i the 10's. I didnt care how i got there, but i wanted to keep it streetable for daily use. So having LS powered cars before i decided that that was the best choice for speed and reliability. After alot of research i made a game plan.

-LQ4/4L80E
-tc78 turbnetics turbo---- this is a turbo !!!
-60lb injectors
-front mount intercooler
-2bar speed density tune
-arp rod bolts
-custom made headers by me
-modified stock oil pan by me
-motor/trans mounts by me
-3600 stall converter
-custom build wiring harness by me

My bad, I overlooked it.
I did not see aftermarket rods or pistons.
Those are two manditory items to get, those engines cannot take any detonation esp, w/a turbo.
Need to study up on the weak points on the Ls engines I guess?

im sorry to sound like a ass but you need to do some reseach. the stock pistons are good for over 500hp and the rods are good for over 600hp. the rod bolts, valve springs, and push rods should be replaced though. if your not on ls1tech.com you should really go there. there are tons of stock lq4's with new rod bolts and springs that are over 500hp. my build is just like this one. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/conve...972-chevelle-lq4-6-0l-4l80e-single-turbo.html he drives the car everyday.

Re: My budget LQ4/4L80E build!

Yes, the LQ4's stock parts are quite capable, just don't push the boost too far on the stock pistons. Heck, the stock LQ4 with longtubes and a tune is in the 380 to 400 hp range.

As you hopefully know, the stock pistons are only good to about 5 or 6 psi. After that, they're a known weakness. There's a CTS-V sitting in a speed shop near me with a rear mount system (twins) that's waiting for a new motor, it was running 8psi. Ran great for 2 years on 6 psi, but the owner cranked up the boost to 8psi and it let go in a couple weeks (but it reportedly ran great up until it went).

And, I didn't notice the ARP rod bolts in the build description, so you have my apologies for recommending something you already had.

EDIT: The good side is, you're running a iron block. If you crank the boost up and loose a set of pistons, you should be able to just do a simple .030" overbore and put fresh slugs in it. With the alum block LSx motors, you're usually looking at a new block (pistons wipe out the bores, bores can't be cleaned up, now you need a new block, if you need a new block, might as well go forged and then you might as well go.....)

If the shoe fits?????

You really need to talk with people that build these engines for a living,& they will tell you the same, replace the pistons & rods as they cannot tolorate detonation. Your budget rebuild will turn into an a costly rebuild if you don't. But there is a chance you will get lucky.
If you are really 21 years old that it explains it all, otherwise, you do really need to study up some more.enough said.

And just to be clear, we're not trying to bring you down, hate on you, or anything else.

Just would hate to see you put it all together, crank the boost up the first time and loose a motor. Just not something you like to hear about, especially when the person involved is young(er) and working on a budget.

Good luck with the buildup, Keep banging away at it.

I hope you put more research into your build than you did for the wheels...

Good luck though. Maybe I missed it, and I'm lazy, but do you have a tenitive date of completion? I just want to know how long it might take a person to do all this when they have the bulk of the build waiting. I'm always waiting for parts or money, looks like you've got most of that covered.

i want to finish it by the end of the year. they only thing that i stop me is the money factor.

for the wheels i am going to put drag radials on these ones and probably get 18" corvette wagon wheels.

EOTY? You're a hardcharger!

I almost had a set of those wagon wheels for sale. You may remember, Chevelledude's blacked out powder coated 18's. Looks like that truck is sold though. I think the guy could be down to sell them if you were interested. He's pretty cool and would probably give you a great deal. He wanted to buy a different set of wheels but since I didn't knock the price far enough down for my truck without them he decided they'd work out. Let me know if you'd like a shot at them, I'll give you his contact info because the wheels are still local to you, after the first week in December they'll be 3k miles away.
