My truck feels soo slow!

Ok, background story I bought the car completely stock, has been that way ever since minus a lack of catback after the converter. I got into a situation with a bone stock looking Cougar XR7 and just about lost. Mind you I gave him a good bump but barely reeled him in before we let off.

The car has had maintance done to it, coil, plugs, wires, rotor, and whatnot. I'm waiting for some extra money to come in so I can get myself a Moates setup to get the car tuned and a wideband for visual comfirmation that I'm not trying to blow up the car.

However, it feels ridiculously slow and that it isn't even NEAR stock horsepower or torque.

Anyother suggestions? :squint:

Get some exhaust on it, The person I bought my first Ty off of who is a Lear jet pilot and turbo engine expert told me that these trucks need a good amount of back pressure and altering that from stock could cause problems. This was 9 years ago, so I never researched it after that. I know the other guys will chime in with better experience on this topic, but I figured I'd contribute my findings in case it would be helpful and correct. Good luck on the problem solving.

not trying to thread jack here, but i have been wondering for a while what people have found to be the best performing exhaust for these trucks? i haven't researched it much but since you made a comment i thought i'd ask

Most likely you will find some knock retard issue's if you put on it scan tool. I would make sure you have replaced the vacuum lines and then see what the scan tool says the engine is doing while driving around.

I went 3" cay back with no muffler at first. It was a night and day difference, truck felt amazing. Only cost me $300 too.

So would you suggest doing a 3" hi-flo cat-catback system and Moates tuning software?

Also make sure your cat isn't clogged. My stock ty lost power gradually to the point of feeling like my geo metro. I connected a fuel pressure gauge to the O2 sensor port and hit 4 psi backing out of the driveway. With a low mile cat she spools like new. You should also do the scan tool and check your vacuum lines.

Re: My truck feels soo slow!

i myself am running 3" from the down pipe back with no cat and a 4" round magnaflow race muffler. is this not recommended? just asking because honestly i don't know. i heard that these vehicles need some back pressure but i also heard that you don't want any back pressure if you are running a turbo.

Re: My truck feels soo slow!

the problem i believe is not back pressure for hp. if you have the stock turbo the waste gate is not big enough to allow enough air to be removed. this will cause over boost.(allowing to much boost) Port the waste gate and you can run dp only if you like and it will feel way faster, turbos will spool faster with less back pressure and that will make you faster

Re: My truck feels soo slow!

Check your wastegate. That will make a truck just crawl if your wastegate rod is to long. I think some just seem to move over time if they are not tight. The correct way to adjust it is to shorten the rod until you have to use tension to pull the rod back on the flapper. If you dont understand what Im saying here is a video that tooky put out and won the turbo I wanted. Most importantly you need to log your truck with datamaster or tunner pro after any adjustments.

intercooler pumps that dont work will really hurt you. Intake temps go over 200 deg and then the truck pulls loads of timing to save itself under boost. I got one of those low mile trucks that was never driven or taken care of and just about everything was bad except the tranny motor and turbo. It takes very little for these trucks to become really slow. I bet 15 second 1/4 mile passes would be all I ran when I first got my truck.

I disagree with the exhaust theory. If everything is running right on your truck you should still have a smile come across your face every time you take off from a light. Even with stock exhaust.

not stock, to say the least. i am running a 25g w/huge fmic and i did the tooky thing when he did that instructional video for some contest last year and WOW! what a difference. the waste gate was way off with a ton of lag. spools up instantly now.

i was just curious if my exhaust set up could be hurting me or make "MY TRUCK FEEL SOO SLOW!" just like the original poster of this posted thread. didn't mean to highjack here.

You need a tune. Thats what your problem is :D
You said you are running a 25g? I have never heard of that. More info on that please.

tune, TUNE!, don't i know it. i just don't know who i can trust to do it though. i don't have access to any of that datamaster or code 59 or tunerpro stuff and i wouldn't/don't know the 1st thing about how to do it myself. so, there's that.

super 25g as was stated by previous owner. don't know too much about, but i think it was through HAHN. rated to 700hp, i think? don't quote me. i am still running the stock exhaust side though. the 25g has a 4" inlet and internal waste gate.

I looked up the 25g. Thats an interesting turbo. I wonder why more people dont run that. Is it a fast spooling turbo? Do you have a boost guage? How much boost are you running with that? What size injectors do you have? Have a stall? Who was the previous owner? RPM can hook you up with a custom tune if you have $500.

Get rid of the stock exhaust. You don't want any back pressure on a turbo motor. A N/A motor needs back pressure not turbo motors. So as long as you got a waste gate that can handle it get rid of the cat and go with a 3" down pipe and get a 3" straight in and out only muffler and your done. You can run without a muffler if you don't mind the noise. Good luck.

pretty d@mn quick on the spool-up. i am running SPL digital boost/egt gauge. when i first bought ty it was running @ 19psi and i found out that wasn't @ wot. fixed the 100% throttle and saw it was @ 22-24psi boost. dropped it down to 16-19psi. (now) running 50# injectors and as far as a stall converter, i just rcently got my trani. rebuilt with denali internals and i asked what size converter and he did not give me a direct answer. glides and hooks up very nice. no problems in that dept.
the prev. owner said he was not a member on here but after my first post "TO THE @$$HOLE WHO SOLD ME MY FIRST TY" i later found out he was a member and could still be under a new name
:dunno:
bought it from colorado and drove it home. about a 1000 mile drive.
