Driving home from a nice birthday dinner with some friends last evening we come to a stop light, 2 in front go through yellow, myself and my buddy in a GN stop. The second I stop he yells kill it and all my coolant dumps out and smoke/steam comes billowing out. The temp gauge is maxed. It happened quick, I had driven less than a mile after letting it sit for 4 hours. I get out and on the passenger side there a puddle of coolant. So I proceed to throw it into neutral and push it into a parking lot. Right away I'm thinking I didn't tighten a hose enough when Ty1177 and I rerouted my IC lines last week. So everyone came back and within minutes we had it jacked up and I dropped out the heat exchanger in the front to check everything. Everything was tight, the top of the engine was completely dry, and when we put it all back together, NO LEAKS. So we drive another 3 or so miles to my house without a problem. Now today there's a small puddle under there but I can't tell where it's leaking from. Any ideas??!! It looks like there's a lot of wetness under the truck back near the firewall area..I'm stumped.

You said a lot of smoke came out....so maybe this is from coolant dripping onto your exhaust manifolds. Maybe you've blown out part of a head gasket, or one of the head bolts near your manifolds isnt sealed from the water jacket properly?

Anybody else see what I'm seeing? Check the passenger side floor under your dash...my guess is heater core...common SyTy problem...

No...I think you were right on the money too! Problem with Internet Diagnossis is that we can only reply based on experience and quality of description...I know my heater core went bad...and it's on the passenger side...sooo....

Im guessin the smoke was from the coolant hittin some hot spots like you said. One of the guys on the scene mentioned heater core. It's just from the amount of coolant that dumped out within a few seconds, I was expecting a busted hose or a major leak when I refilled it. Either way it's gotta go in to the shop this week. Whats it take to replace a heater core?

I may be missing something but......you said the puddle was on the passenger side. INSIDE or OUTSIDE on the ground? Inside on the floor can be two things. Busted core or one of the clamps was left loose on the heater core lines themselves. Heater core usually leaks inside. You said your coolant temps shot up. A leaking intercooler line does not effect engine temps to the magnitude you are describing. If one of your heater lines are broken it can be an issue.
You weren't real descriptive about exactly where at on the Passenger side. Look up front at the radiator. If you have a stock intake, remove it and look down at that funny S-shape hose that runs under the battery tray and see if there is any coolant there. That metal line may have broken or something may have rubbed through the hose in that tight area(common). What this can do is allow the coolant to leak down to the point where it stops and doesn't cool well anymore. Also look at the heater core line that runs off the intake manifold. Hard to see from under the intercooler but can leak out under there to. The heater core lines suck because coolant runs through these constantly. So coolant losses here will effect your engine temps.
Hope this helps. Bad thing about working on your truck is that you will disturb things that are hardened and they will break. I've done just a FEW myself.

Check the hose clamps on the line from the radiator that goes to the heater core too. I had one break, the one under the battery tray. Could not see it at first but when I keep looking I found it. Sort of the same thing as you, go for little ride and then temp guage spikes and smoke.
My solution was to install a single rubber hose from the radiator to the heater cose=no more hose clamp under battery tray to break.

we had a heater core problem in a jimmy we picked it up for dirt cheap. It was fine one day me and my buddy finnaly got to have it out in the desert. It was just a one tire fryer but still fun. after the second doughnut out in the desert by my house the whole passenger side floor was soaked with coolant. we cleaned it up and sold it for 2x we payed for it. Profit and fun :lol: way worth it
