Need datamaster help PLEASE!

Ok i have the datamaster , with a belkin USB to serial (F5U103). I have only two available com ports, which are 1 & 3. Nethier work, I have tried other usb to serial s as well, but nothing, all I get is "there is no connection bewtween your computer and the aldl port, or something. I cant stand it I have had this thing for two months trying to get it to work. I have a Sony Vaio laptop, with Windows XP. I searched for what others had done , and bought this belkin because thats what worked for them. The only thing I think it could be is that the install discs that came with the belkin were for windows 98, and windows 95. So i did not get the propper install maybe?? Where could i get the install disc,that was supposed to ,come with it? (it said compatiable for windows xp). Just someone please guide me before I play skeet shoot with my laptop.

ok found and installed software, my computer was infected with some virus. I fixed it. Now I have a com 6. I am going to go try it.

peice of s@*&! I am so pissed. The datamaster only has two com ports at one time, and i switched the belkin which was on com 6 to com 3, then the datamaster got rid of 3. As of now I have no comp ports on the DM. I am going to wait untill someone helps me. Thanks.

Ohh if anyone has this belkin adapter, does the red led light up or the green one. Just wondering because mine could be broken cause when on it lights up red.

I had trouble with a usb to serial adapter, and had to buy another brand. I can't remember what the brands were though.

That was the longest conversation I think I've ever seen anyone have with themselves on a thread.

Seriously though, I would like to know what ends up being the problem as I'll have a serial cable in the next week or so and my laptop is about a two month old Dell and only uses USB ports. I'm worried about having issues with the adapter but was told that the Belkin works well which is what I have. I would like a straight up USB cable but have yet to hear if that can be done. In the meantime, keep us posted with the results as I might have to refer back to threads like this.

Data Master does work with XP. What are you using for an interface? It sounds like you are not configuring everything properly. Not sure if your laptop has it, but, I had to go into my BIOS to adjust everything right. You can turn COM ports on and off from there also. That message you are getting sounds like youre not hooked up to the ALDL . Did you try to go to TEST COM on DM and see what it says? Write back with the EXACT message it displays. You may also need to mess around with the ALDL timing link. And also, Most of the time (in my experience), I go for COM 1.

I never was able to get my belkin adapter to work eithe tried every dowload available just wouldn't work with my laptop. So I went out and bought a SIIG single serial pc card and never looked back this connects firts time everytime mightwant to look into it.

Did you try disable the CCM handshake?

I have a new dell and is using the belkin. It crashed my pc (blue screen of death) everytime on the first connection, it would connect for a min the bam. After I reboot, its works ok until next time.

Red means it's powered
Red and 1 green light, means your usb is connected
Red and 2 green lights on and blinking means your ecm is talking to your computer

Datamaster does not have a patch to make the Belkin work with our trucks.
They are currently working on a Beta patch for our version.

I use Freescan for now with the Belkin, freescan finds the comport for you.

Yes I i do the com tests but now I have 0 coms to choose from so I cant give you th exact message. I will try to go to BIOS. Thanks

Hmmm just remembered, that my belkin only ights up red now, when everything is connected, but before I installed the drivers from the site for xp, it blinked green when all was connected. Maybe the belkin is broke???

Still not working, I have com1, and com 2 now showing. Here is what it says,

One way to test if the ALDL adapter and Belkin are working is the following:

Go to Programs > Accessories > Communications > Hyperterminal.

Configure Hyperterminal to whatever COM port the Belkin is set to.

Set the Data Rate at 9600

Make sure JUST the Belkin and ALDL adapter are connected to the computer. DO NOT plug the ALDL cable into the ALDL port on the vehicle. This test can actually even be done from your home computer for testing purposes.

Once you configure that Hyperterminal connection and start the connection, you'll see a flashing cursor. Try typing something. If you see what you are typing.........it's working correctly. However if you see nothing but jibberish or nothing at all.........you have a communication issue.

That should help determine if you're having a cable/adapter issue or DM.
