Need Help, my saga with SY1616

We'll, I bought Syclone 1616 from a guy in Colorado (not Austin) who owned it for about a month or two. Get it here and it looks good BUT, the surprises keep mounting. First off I was told the truck's cladding was only painted now I find out the whole truck was done (why?). I replaced all four stock shocks since they were 16 years old and in need of relacement. Next, take the truck to get inspected and here's where the fun begins. Technician points out many thing:

Pan on motor has a brand new Felpro gasket, OK but there is also a bad knock (when hot of course). Hmmm, why the new gasket?

The trans was not shifting properly so after trying to adjust it, the cable sticks...minor thing.

The front end needed most everything replaced (2 shocks, upper and lower ball joints, idler, pitman) plus alignment ....everything should be tight.

My main concern is of course the knock? To me, the truck drove well and I presonally never noticed but probably don't know what to listen for either. What are my options here? I feel really taken by the guy that I bought the truck from (considering I paid a good penny for it too) since it was described as being so great. Granted it's a nice truck but damn, I have nearly $19K in it now (including new wheels and tires) and still have a knock issue to deal with. Anyone in the NJ/PA area willing to help me out? If I do need to rebuild the motor, what are my options? Can I buy a kit? What would you do in this situation. Sorry to rant on but I'm pretty miffed about this.

What can I ask my mechanic to try. I've done some research and need to know how to determine if I have false knock???

Thanks,

Vince

Perkasie is in Upper Bucks County...few miles north of Doylestown...not too far from Central NJ.

I live in Central Montgomery County (farther than Bucks) and made it to your place (Don) last year in about 45 minutes I think.

Poke a hole in the oil filter (removed ofcourse) and see if there is cloudy speckles in it.

My truck to my surprise need all that work as well ~45K miles. It wasn't bad that I noticed it, but when inspecting it when I found the slop.

That would be great. I would appreciate that greatly. My wife works in Raritan which is about an hour away...if that helps. I should have it back by Monday and am willing to drive it to nj...still drives fine, just has a knock.

To see if the internals are bad?

Re: Need Help, my saga with SY1616

what kind of knock do you speak of?
Rod knock, piston slap, bad mainbearings?
whats your oil pressure at idle?
Was the tech refering to knock from detonation/pre-ignition? our wonderful stock intercoolers cause some of that.
is the knock consistent w/ the rpms, or is it at half the revs. that will tell you if its valve train related.

This knock stuff is new to me . The oil pressure is like 20 at idle (cold) .... on the stock guage. Don't know the answers to the rest.

Again, it's got good power and I personally never noticed any knock.

Thank you

Been in the car business most my life, when you work on and sell used cars you can pretty much ID any knock-lol. Make no mistake I'm no super mechanic but I can point you in the right direction with it. With what you describing I'm thinking someone maybe threw some new mains or rod bearings to make it through the sale. But if you have a few mins, take the serpentine belt off and listen to it then, just to rule out a water pump or alt. bearing noise, you'd be surprised at what kind of sounds the accessories can make.

Don't know if this helps but the previous owner(before the guy you bought it from) mentioned a "motor noise" in one of his ebay adds. I remember because I was "looking" at that truck. I believe it stated he was told by a mechanic it could be the timing chain? :2cents:

I rode in the truck when Austin owned it and when Terry bought it. I didnt hear a thing. But yes to check if your internals are bad. Last time I rode in it was about a week after Terry bought it and it felt pretty damn strong to me.

I don't deny that but the reality is that I have put maybe 15 miles on it since I have owned it.....something isn't right.
