Need some help before buying my Ty!

Hey everyone, I'm looking to buy a Ty, but before I do I need to sell my Chevy Tahoe. In the mean time I'm trying to do as much research as I can about the pros and cons of the Typhoon. I know all the pros, but from you guys out there that have these sweet rides I'd like to hear you thoughts and wisdom. Are there any common problems with the sy/ty's? What are things to avoid when looking at a truck? Do these trucks have a lot of drivetrain problems, how about the turbo systems? and the front suspention? Are they more expensive to fix compaired to a regular Jimmy or sonoma?
I just want to make sure I don't end up buying a POS thats been beaten all it life and will now need lots of repairs. I'm sure ya'all have your stories, I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance!
Will.

p.s. I'm looking for a 93' with around 80k or less, preferably black, if anyone knows of someone looking to sell.

First and foremost --WWW.CARFAX.COM-- The rest is all about how much you want to spend so us guys here on the board will have an idea of what to tell you to look for. If you have one in mind the first thing I would look at is, has it been wrecked? I'll stop here and let the others here tell you the rest. Good luck and personally I would go for a '92 TY because it has "TYPHOON" in the headrest.

Theses sorts of questions come up once every couple of weeks so I've taken the liberty of quoting one of my previously written posts to another BB. To answer a couple of quick questions of yours first.. Yes these trucks require more maintanence than a normal sonoma/jimmy. In fact it would probably be a smart move not to buy a syty with the intention of using it as a daily driver.. Not that others don't do this, but problems usually pop up and the one thing syty's tend not to be are reliable... Your best move would be to talk to someone like Jeff Scott or Nick in your area as they could give you some first hand knowledge of what to expect...

Have someone with syty experience take a look at the truck for you before you consider the purchase...

Things that could cause problems:

front propshaft
Detonation (make sure you buy a laptop & scan tool -->datamaster)
Ignition (plugs, cap/rotor, wires --> go through these like water)
fuel pump (it's ten years old so plan on purchasing a Walboro)
IC pump (might want to buy a Jabsco)unless someone upgraded to Air2Air
Upgrade to 160 thermostat (will help with detonation and MAT's)
ball joints go bad on these trucks often if roads are bad (keep them greased )
motor mounts (torque of engine tends to rip through driver's side mounts... consider polyurethane replacement from Jeff Scott then heavily wrap it in heat shield material or they will melt, another alternative is solid mounts)
Check wastegate spring condition..

Those are just things you should know about and consider doing

In regards to the truck being close to 60k miles and normal maintenance...

Consider using GM Top Engine cleaner FIRST to remove any carbon build up before installing new plugs and doing oil change...
Reason I say first is TEC can foul plugs and you will need an oil change after you use the cleaner...

Use Mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic .. Always synthetic.. nothing else..

Check PCV valves (if they don't rattle replace them.. still them probably want to replace)

Do a radiator flush..

drain and replace IC fluild,, same time replace IC lines with rubber hose...

Do tranny pan fluid change.. and replace filter with 700r4 filter.. NOT 700r4e filter... Consider using Mobil 1 synthetic tranny fluid and lubeguard if it's cheap and available.. also might want to add a B&M tranny cooler like the kit ATR sells... Tranny's break fast under stock power due to power and heat...

Change out transfercase fluid.. again mobil 1 ATF synthetic...

drain rear differential.. replace fluid..

suck out front diff fluid and replace..

might need a new idler pulley and fan belt... assider from those things there shouldn't be much else off the top of my head other than checking torsion bar mounts, steering components... tranny mount etc...

Just make sure you use nothing less than 91 octane, synthetic oil, and purchase a scan tool... good luck

Any other questions please reffer to this thread first ..
