New BMW Wheels on My Sy

This guy at work had a '99 BMW 540i and he sold it. He bought these RPM wheels for it and never mounted them. He is offering them to me for basically peanuts so I figured I'd test fit them for kicks. They actually look pretty damn good IMO. The fronts have a deep lip like the rears and the black center with polished lip is pretty tough looking. The nice thing is the rear is an 18x9 so I can probably stick 285/35/18s on the back instead of the 265/35/18s I have on my Hamann HM2 rims. I weighed the rear and it was 24 lbs. which is what the Hamann 18x8.5" rims weighed so I think the fronts are probably lighter than the ones on there now plus I like them without center caps. The only problem I see is the rears stick out about 1/2" and I'm wondering if that's going to look like crap. What do you guys think? Wouldn't mind having another set of wheels for the Sy just for a change.

You cant tell from those pics about them sticking out. I think they'll look really nice.

From what I pieced together from all my scrolling they look pretty damn good, add some rubber and put your truck down and I'd think you'd be really happy.

Hey bro, long time no see. Those things look pretty sweet. I'd be concerned about them sticking out a bit. What offsets are they? Maybe I can help. Lemmie know if you'll be needing those things mounted up. I'll give you a call soon I hope, once school settles down a little bit.

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

My tires stick out about 1/4" (but only front left and back right :dunno: ) ... hasn't been problematic yet... except it won't pass inspection like that. I actually like the look.

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

I will keep the Hamann rims because I really like the way they look and the 5-spoke design is timeless. These new wheels basically fell into my lap, and the black w/polished lip look seems to be pretty popular right now so I figured, what the heck. The Hamann's are starting to yellow and there are some curb dings and nicks on them so I may get them refinished and repaired while I have them off. Then again, I may change my mind and just get rid of the Hamann's after seeing these RPM wheels on my truck, mounted with tires.

Steven - can you let me know if the 285/35/18 is an OK tire size to run on an 18x9 rim? I'll hit you up to mount and balance these pretty soon. I'm 99% sure I'm going to buy them and try them out. He'll take $300 for all four and they're brand new, never mounted....not a bad deal.

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

That is a killer deal. The 285 recommends a 9.5-11" rim width, and is 657mm tall. I might suggest a 275/35, because it accepts a 9-10.5" wheel, and is only slightly shorter at 650mm tall. FYI, stock tire size (245/50-16) is 652mm tall. Finding a staggered setup for those keeping the same height all around would kinda be tough too. Lemmie know what you think.

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

Would that mess up my t-case, having 2mm shorter tires in the rear? I really want to get these wheels mounted up with tires to see how they look.

Nah, that won't mess anything up as long as they're the same all around. It'd probably be a little too much to run 285's in the rear and 275's up front. considering the wheels are an inch wider in the rear, you will see the tire bubble out a little more in the front; it'll be a little fuller. the rear will be pulled back a little. they probably wouldn't look too out of place or anything with the same size all around though.

I would sport those all day long. Those look sick :tup: Mount them up and take some more pics with rubber.

Yeah the 285's would probably be fine on the 9's, but Steven you don't think that a 275 on a 8.5 is too much? Besides what size would you run 275/35R18 and 285/35R18, that wont work. If you definitely want the 285's then you would have to run 285's in the front ( which is too wide for the wheel ) or run like a 245/40R-18 in front, which would fit the wheel and be almost as tall as the 285/35R-18's

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

Oh, I do think a 275 on a 8.5 is a bit too much. I thought for some reason they were 9's in the front and 10's in the rear. This makes things tougher. The 245/40 would be an option for the front, but probably not one that we'd really be happy with on these trucks, especially considering the fact that they'll generally push before they oversteer. If they're only 8.5's up front, a 275 would probably be okay, but not recommended. You can usually fudge about half an inch over or under what they suggest, but it's not the best thing to do. Hrmmmm...

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

OK, here's the deal: the wheels I have on there now are 18x8.5 with 265/35/18 Kumho Ecsta MX tires all the way around. These new RPM wheels are 18x8 in the front and 18x9 in the back. I would like to take two of my existing tires off and move them over to the 18x8 RPM fronts since the tires are basically brand new. For the rears, I would like to go wider with something like a 275 or 285, if that's possible. Ideas?

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

I'm thinkin' it's gonna be hard to get the right tires for a 8" wheel. I think we were pushin it with the 8.5's on a 265. I'll think about it/look into it when I get home from school, but I think you want wider wheels.

X 2

8" = 245/40R-18
9" = 275/35R-18

You can put the 265's on the 9", but the 265's are too short for the 245's. It's going to be a height issue with the 265's a 235/40R-18 is pretty close in height, and would fit the wheel but is probably more narrow then you want to go.

Re: New BMW Wheels on My Sy

I don't mind going with skinnier tires up front. So what combo front/rear tires will have approximately the same height and not jack up my t-case? I do want 275 or 285 on those rears, if possible. If I have to buy four new tires, then so be it. If there's no combo that'll work, I'll just give the rims back to the guy.
