New box for Sy

Re: New box for Sy

okay, no way there box is bigger than mine. I used this site to figure my cubic feet.

http://www.transchool.eustis.army.mil/twvrmo/cubicfeetininches.htm

Lets assume that the dimensions are inner(even though they are most-likely not) Plug in and take half and you get ruffly .65 cu ft. A little bit more since it not a perfect triangle. But when you take into account wall thickness it goes down. My cu ft is true inner. I just wanted to get a box that was as the .8 required for the kicker.

Cost wise. This was my tally:

1 sheet mdf 32 bucks. Lots extra too!
Scrap box wrap stuff from local sound shop 10 bucks. Luckly it was just enough to cover it.
And the little speaker cap was 7 bucks.
5 bucks for spray adhesive. (already had a staple gun with staples)
5 bucks in beer

So yeah your time is worth money, but mine only cost ruffly 60 bucks. Not to shabby.

Oh yeah. Added plus, if the seats all the way back it rests on the box, come up one and it doesn't touch. I know that if you measure up 15 3/4 from the floor and out 4 3/4 you will be into your seat. Tall guys don't like moving the seat up!

killerrudy / Crutchfield:
Width: 27" / 22-1/4"
Height: 20-4/5" / 15-3/4"H
Depth 1: 1-1/4" / 4-3/4"D1
Depth 2: 6-1/2" / 6-1/2"
Material thickness: 5/8" / 1/2"
Volume: .79 cu ft / .83 cu ft.

The specs of the Cruchfield box will not fit behind the seat of a Syclone without having to move the seat up.

Re: New box for Sy

Don't know if anyone has tried replicating my box yet, but I developed an annoying leak in the top seem last night. (first noticed that is) So make sure that you silicone the hell out of that joint! I am going to be taking it back apart to stuff it with poly-fill anyways so it doesn't make me that mad. Since I am here, can anyone attest to the benefits for using poly-fill in your sub enclosure?

Re: New box for Sy

I'm going to build one. I've got a couple of old unused RF Punch amps (BBQ grill style) sitting around that I'd like to use .
I'll probably throw a RF sub in as well.

What size amp did you use?

So when I use this I can't come up with the same volume as you.
Can you confirm H, W, L, D1 & D2 measurements. As I look at your drawing, I confused now.
Thanks.

Re: New box for Sy

I just plugged in everything on the Rockford Fosgate calculator and got .76 cu ft. Not far off of what I got using another sites calculator.

Outside Dimensions (Gross)

H= 20.8 W= 27 D2= 1.25 D1= 6.5

The amp I picked out was the Orion Cobalt: A mono amp good for 400rms at 2ohms and 300rms at 4ohms
http://www.drdetailshop.com/co800.1.htm

Paid 109 bucks on ebay for it new! Not a bad deal!

Watch out though. I am very sure that if the mounting depth is greater than 4 inches it will not fit! My kicker needed to have the box backing shaved a 1/16 or so to fit in.

Thanks, that's the number I came up with as well. I thought I was using the wrong dimensions from your diagram.

The sub I'm thinking of is a 3.75" bottom mount or 3.5" top mount, so it looks like I should be good.

Re: New box for Sy

I do find it interesting that the other sites calculator was off by .3 by imputting the same info.. Strange

For your reference, Mine is leaking along the butt joint at the top. Just for one 2 inch strip though. So make sure when you lay that face board on you have a good amount of goup at that joint. I must of just missed one spot or something lame like that.

I also mounted the amp as low on the backer as I could safely do so to have good air flow all around it and basicly not be pressed into the seat back.

Re: New box for Sy

dont use silicone to seal a box the vapors from it will destry the woofer, also that fuse holder is supposed to be under the hood within 18 inches of the battery

Re: New box for Sy

doesn't that woofer move enough to hit the center console?

No, it is close, but it just misses the center console.

My battery is just behind the cab, under the bed. So the fuse length is only 28 inches from the battery. Since I am not running a lot of power, I didn't feel it was a safety issue.

Re: New box for Sy

groun that cable between the battery and fuse and watch the fire closer to the battery the better

I am not following your thought? You say that a ground in between the fuse and the battery will cause a fire? I took proper precautions to zip tie the line so that no rubbing could really occur. Let me know if that is what you mean.

Re: New box for Sy

the cable running from your battery to the fuse gets damaged and grounds it will catch fire very fast if its a normal battery it could blow up,

OH!! lol! I understand that one! lol! Well I do have that flex tubing around the wire and it is held firmly to the frame rail! I actually have a Optima Marine battery in my truck. Don't know if that makes a difference though.

Re: New box for Sy

You're still going to want to fuse it at the battery instead of the amp. If your positve ever short out your truck you'll know why in a hurry.

As for your box, I thought of going with that but then I changed my mind. Instead of one 10" I'm going with two 8" subs, one behind each seat and the amp will go behind the center console. I've already started and I'll post some pics later. I might counter sink them a 1/4" since I'm using 1/2".

As for the sub being right up on the seat, this is a sub I built for my Silverado and as you can see its right on the seat with impressions on the seat.
subx.jpg
and it sounds great to me.

I got lazy and didn't want to carpet it so I used some bed liner spray and got carried away :eek:ops . to seal the box I started off with gorilla glue and clamps, then hello staple gun and then I used silicon to line all the joints on the inside and let it dry for a couple of days.

Re: New box for Sy

When you build a speaker box, do NOT use silicone! As warmpancakes said, it does more harm than good.

Cut everything nice and neat. Use a good wood glue on all the joints, then either pre-drill/screw or staple (pneumatic - using 1-1/2" long 1/4" crown staples) the box. When you are done, but havent installed the face yet, take a can or two of cheap black spray paint and hit the insides of the box very well. Finish putting it together, wire it up, and hit the balls out of it!

Following this method, I have had all but the baddest of boxes stay together...when under 5,000 watts are being used! You can use a little forethought when placing your ports, and they will also add rigidity to the box.
