New Computer???

Ok, I turn the key over and the engine cranks over but I let go of the key the engine just dies. NGK UR5 Spark plugs? They look good. New Conrad Cap and Rotor? It looks good. Maybe it's the fuel filter or pump. So I take to the shop down the street, "for a professional opinion" :-?

Now they're telling me I need new computer because they're having problems pulling the code for a diagnostics. The guy said he has to wiggle the connection but can't make a good enough connection because there are bent pins. He said it looks like somebody has tampered with the computer. (Ultimate?) hmmm

Well it's gonna cost me $290 plus labor. Lots of labor! Should I let this butt pirate take my money?

No, find a local who has some syty experience to help you out.

Where are you from? Do you have an Ultimate or aftermarket chip?

I'm in Maryland in the Ellicott City area. Yeah, I'm gonna get it towed back to my house today but I'm gonna need to find someone with some experience with this. Daron you out there? Anybody?

I also gotta tell this guy that it doesn't take two hours labor to "figure this out". They told me $68 bux for a diagnostic. Ok so there was no diagnostic, that's still $68 bux right?

No, dont give up the cash.

It would be hard to damage the ALDL port that much, but hey anything is possible I assume. You dont need butt pirates to pull the codes, a paperclip and a little reading on www.sportmachines.com will fix you up.

Should you need an ECM, my local salvage yard sells them for 45 bucks with a 30day return policy. They are simple to replace.

My typhoons ECM died sometime back. Normally when you turn the key to "On" you should see the check engine light blink on, off, then stay on. On the Ty, it would blink for a sec and then turn off. Tried pulling codes, nada happinin... Replaced the ecm and she started up like normal.
Watch the check engine light when you turn the key to the "On" position (dont turn to start) then try to pull the codes, and let us know what you find.

Well I got there and the story changed to two hours to figure there was a "burnt" circut board in the ECM. The offical invoice says that the ECM would not communicate. I argued a little but I guess I wussed out and forked over the $136 bux for nothing much.

Thanx Daron for the confidence. Doesn't seem that bad now. I'll email ya 'bout the new ECM.

Ok, today I tried the paper clip trick in the ALDL port. It did just like Daron said, the check engine light blinked for half a sec. then nothing. So I guess this means I'll need a new ECM.

I found this part number off of http://www.sytyauthority.net/ (new GM #16198263) This is what I need right?

I found a new ECM on www.gmpartsdirect.com for only a hundred bux. I can't believe this shop was gonna charge me $290 for a new one!

And I was sure to print out http://syty.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16822 Man, you guys are great!

Side note: My neighbor was out there with his Twin Turbo Mitsu 3000gt putting in a new intake and K&N filter. He saw me out there fidiling up under the dash. He told me his was pissed cuz he no longer has the fastest car on the block. I laughed and said I have to get this thing going faster than 0 MPH first. He really wants a crack at me he said. He's got a new BOF, intake, tranny and exhaust. I told him he should let me do everyting on the SyTy Readme first and then we'll see.

Oh, and I see what the guy meant by the ALDL being "damaged". The 'G' pin for the fuel pump isn't there. Nor is there a wire coming out of the back of the port. WTF! Am I in the right place? It's the little serial type port mounted under the dash on the drivers side just to the right of the steering column???? Anybody have any pictures of the ALDL port for a newbie here? Or should I order a new ALDL wire harness too? Part numbers?

Anybody have the part number for the ALDL wire harness? Or does that come with the ECM part # 16198263. I can't imagine it would.

Anybody have any ideas on why the 'G' pin is missing and the wire behind it?

Tryed to find the connector in parts book, but I couldn't. My guess that it's the part of the wiring harness. However the connector is not the issue, but the cables should be there and should be intact. Get a Syclone Service supplement or CD and check the wiring shematics.

Peace,

As long as your A and B terminals are there, you should be able to pull codes...

If your ECM fails the power on self test ( when you turn the key on, Check engine lights, goes out, then comes back on and stays lit) the Check engine will not stay on. You do not need to short the A and B terminal to do this check. Just turn the key on but do not turn to start. If your light flashes real qiuck and then goes out, I'd suspect an ECM issue, whether it is internal or power related.
