New gear shift indicator (possible interest?)

Well, I know its been about a year since this topic has come up (here), but Im gonna get serious about making the LED SyTy Shift Indicator a reality. Ive sourced out 95% of the parts I need to make them, I just need to see if theres enough interest to begin production and how much people would be willing to pay.

I know the OEM replacement parts arent cheap either, but just remember its going to take quite a few components and designing to make a complete "semi-plug & play" replacement unit, so if youre planning on posting "Id buy one for $25.00".... then just save your post and move on cause thats just not gonna be realistic.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Well sorta. Unfortunately when making products for the SyTy community, you need to take into account the number of units that could possibly be sold and that will directly effect the price in many cases.

Its not just much the cost of materials, but also cost of equipment and supplies needed to make a finished product, not to mention time. Being that its not even worth the expense to make a prototype for myself makes it difficult to to estimate the production time, but Im going to guess 3 - 5 hours for each unit, that will probably come down some if I was to mass produce them.

When Mid-America Motorworks charges $50 for a shift needle and $50 for a clear plate with 7 letters and numbers painted on it, then I would easily be able to justify $100.00 for a complete unit that would replace all of those components and more, not to mention would eliminate the fun task of alligning the little rod with the slider when putting the console back together

If only 10 people were interested in them, then I dont even think I could realistically sell them at a price that would cover the equipment and parts, forget the labor.

So thats where I stand at the moment. I plan on making them with Amber and Red LEDs for starters, but Green would also be an option and Blue & White as well for probably a small price increase.

I know the pains first hand.

So is $100-200 ball park range fair?

Sounds like a decent idea/price. I always wanted to replace the plasitc/plexi part on mine since it was all scratched up.

oh I know you do.

That would be a ball park range but Im trying to stay close to the lower end of that

Since I have such a lack of vision/creativity I would like to see one, to get the jist of it, but if it is cool I'd be interested....couldn't you market the mid to late 80's vettes too? I thought they had the same shifter style?

X2... I would love to see one. I am also interested if this is still on.

 Yeah thats understandable. The interest seems to be there, I just need to find/design the last few parts then Ill feel a bit better about diving into this.

As for the Vettes, yes the thought did cross my mind, the indicator itself should bolt up the same, I just need to see how the actual shifter assembly is, if there is any difference or not.

its going to look like the original indicator with a little more of a "syty style" writing, and you'll have the option of White or Black letters instead of just the OEM White, and they will be backlit by Amber, Red, Green, Blue or White LEDs when you are in gear.
