whats up ya'll! :D

so... long time lurker of the site, even before I got my Typhoon. Been a dream to own one of these things since before I was legally allowed to drive. Finally got one back in March of this year. And what a shit box it was. Definitely worth every penny I paid for it, to me. I've also got a 92 S10 Blazer with the vortec engine. Had it for a long time and I've almost replaced everything but the paint. But the blazer isn't why I'm here. :rotf:

This Typhoon has a list of problems a mile long. The fact it starts sometimes is amazing (and when it starts without a big smoke cloud, it just makes my day) BUT, this shade tree mechanic doesn't give up easily. I've fixed a lot of the small stuff. Thank god s10's are easy to find in the pick-and-pull junk yards around here and that I've already owned an S10. Otherwise I would have given up. Anyway, I've fixed a lot of stuff and it's slowly getting better. But there's still a number of issues going on with it that I'm at a loss about. So, I'll probably be posting in some old threads for help, and maybe starting a few new ones.

But I'm really happy to finally be a part of this site and look forwards to talk with folks and hopefully seeing some of you at the meets.

Oh and I've already taken her out for some rather nice photo shoots.

Welcome. What's the truck #? (last four of VIN)

Wanna learn more about them...take a ride up to NJ in October for our annual meet. Lots of knowledge there...even if you don't bring the truck (2.5 hour ride from Germantown)

#1336

And absolutely! I have every intention on being at the meet in NJ, and hopefully with the Typhoon. I was just gonna show up and say hi and beg someone to poke an admin for me to let me create an account on here. But Keith got back to me and got me signed up, as you can see. :D

Re: new(ish) guy from maryland

and just to vent, plus get it out there. And anyone, feel free to add their :2cents: on fix's

right now the major issues its having are...

- big puff of smoke at start up. happens when sitting on a hill or just after a long drive and has had a chance to cool off. my guess is a bad valve seal, if I'm lucky. If I'm unlucky, bad ring. Once that first puff is out, it doesn't blow blue smoke out while driving. And the dollar bill test just says its running rich. Does give some black smoke on a boost launch tho...

- massive overboost. hooked up to a laptop with datamaster running, computer is looking for 14psi. its reading 15psi. the boost gauge in the dash is waaaay past the 15 mark. aftermarket boost gauge reads about 19 with spikes up to 22 at WOT.

- hard fuel cut and missing 3-4 WOT shift. Dunno if these are related or not. I think they are because I can get it to drop into 4th at 100+ if i get it up there and then drop to about 70% throttle. and as long as I slowly keep going, it'll stay in 4th. Anyway... the hard cut. I was under the impression that these things have an RPM limit at 4800. Mine hits 5000ish and then will just cut the fuel. which makes it drop back but then it picks right back up. The trans does not like this at all. And if this happens enough the CEL finally comes but then goes back out. This is probably the worst of the issues.

- has a "grinding acceleration". I don't know how else to put this. I'll have to make a video or something of it. But basicly from a dead stop and just flat foot take off, no boost launch, it'll fly off the line, slip right into 2nd, but from there to whenever you let off it's got this knuckle dragging feel to it. like it's not running at full potential. Maybe I'm used to my STi and it's ridiculous ability to get from 0-150 like there's nothing to it. I'm more inclined to believe something is very wrong based on the other issues i have plus the video's i've seen of these trucks in action.

- very ruff idle. Datamaster shows it holding 650 with tiny drops to 625 with it recording as fast as possible. But my tach looks like a caffinated squirrel's tail. I'd chalk it up to a bad gauge but there are times when its spot on. Doesn't twitch at all. And the truck rumbles more when the gauge is vibrating. Noticed it really changes the idle based on temperature outside. Maybe the MAF is bad?

Haven't gotten to it yet (as in dropped the current brain box), but I'm willing to bet money that this truck has an aftermarket chip in it. I think someone who had this before tried to tweak and tune it. And when they went to get rid of it, the put it back to stock but forgot about the chip.

OH and found out it has 4.10 gears in it. Wanna run it back to 3.73 or down to 3.42. Plus the front diff has been locked up. Makes for fun tight corners and tire squealing.

I just got a complete tune up kit (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil) for it. MSD for everything. Plugs are NKG. Plus I got the G3 adapter and chip from Moates plus the little program selector so I can make my own ultimate chip. Going to program it with just the stock for now till i can get it running correctly.

There's a lot of other issues. cross over tube for the intake is busted and doesn't like to stay attached. Ac has a bad leak at the condenser which I didnt find till after I put a new compressor in (original one was burnt up and the clutch had been removed) and recharged the system. two of the speakers are blown. the idler arm joint is worn down to almost a nub and as a result the truck pulls hard left and the right tire has about had it with that shit. Rust. soooo much rush. Any part of the truck behind the cladding is rust. Drivers side fender has so much rust that the cladding almost fell off. Axle is rusted. Torsion bars are rusting. control arms are rusting. ugh. Someone parked this in a grassy field as a shrine to detroit for a few years. Oh and the engine bay is a mess. my OCD wants to rip it all out and clean the hell out of everything and put it back. Which I'll probably do in time...

Re: new(ish) guy from maryland

the puff of smoke on startup is extremely common. 99% of the time its just oil that has leaked past the valvesteam seals and into the cylinders when its not running. The amount is so small that when its running, you wont notice it.

Replace the valvestem seals or dont worry about. I'd say probably all of the stock motor trucks do this.

Hey that truck looks familiar. Welcome and glad it ended up with someone who cares about it.

I am pretty sure this is one we bought in late 2010 and sold about a year and a half later.

I still have all the pics, will have to go through and fix the links.

We bought it from a young guy in Towson and it was significantly worse than you see it today. You literally couldn't even open the doors, no brakes, passenger floor full of antifreeze, etc etc. I did a lot of work to it and had it to where it drove nice minus no a/c.

My wife drove it daily for about a year, but a two door just wasn't working for a baby seat (look down between the seat belts in the back, there should be a hoop i welded in to attach the child safety seats to). We wanted to do a frame off on it, and have a his-and-hers syty pair to go to shows and stuff with but the timing wasn't right with plans for a second child in the near future.

Anyway, I am not far up the road from you so we will definitely have to get together. I love the pic with the train btw. You ever get up to Mount Airy Jimmy Cone on Saturday nights?

Also here is a link to my Photobucket album for the truck.
