Hello there,

My mane is Chris and I just bought a 92 Typhoon from "huggles" on the forum and just wanted to say hi and see who else is on the west coast of BC. I will be posting a general Hello within the next few days and post some pics of the truck also when I get a chance to take them.

Cheers

Yeah and we should arrange a get-together sometime this month. There's more and more of us in the lower mainland here it seems. Although as of Sept 30, I'll be gone for awhile.

I'm hoping to figure out a weekend sometime soon to arrange a small meet.

That could be a possibility. I have relatives there I could stay with while my truck is getting worked on and to pick it up. I am going to have a look in the motor and see what's up. Depending on the severity of the damage, I will let you know. I will look into the shipping costs, and depending on how much is broken, I will let you know what I decide. Other than that, who out here can I bring it to have a look at it that will know what they are doing and that isn't going to screw me over.

Where do you local boys bring your trucks to? Do any of you have a favorite place to go, or does anybody do their own work? Let me know here, I am in a bit of a bind. The truck is located right now in Langley, and I would like to get it brought right to a place that can do the work. I need some suggestions here, thoughts? HELP!

Thanks
Chris

If Tony has time available, you would be crazy to not take him up on his offer. Search some of his posts to get an idea of who he is. (Gm Tech/certifiable syty nut/neat freak)

Ya, if you're able to bring it out to the SyTy capital of Canada.. I mean Edmonton, then thats going to be your best bet. I have brought my Sy to a local guy but he's just done oil-changes + a few misc little things, nothing like a complete engine rebuild on it. Not saying he wouldnt be capable of doing the rebuild but he's not as familiar with Sy/Ty's as Tony or any of the Edmonton guys.

Yeah I would LOVE to bring the truck to Tony, but he is 1200KM away...

I will find out how much shipping would be to bring the truck out to him...

Unless I could find out how much it would be to ship Tony out here... :) :friends:

I'm thinkin' it would probably be cheaper to get the truck out there... :boink:

Still would like to have someone just look at it out here first to determine the status of the damage. Anyone?

With internal damage I would guess it would be best to leave it to the pros. it will come down to what you want to spend. You could find a used syty engine online and gamble or spend the bucks on a full rebuild and replacing broken parts. I just glad I did not buy it after i looked at it, because my wife would be making me sleep in it right now..

Yeah,

The truck was quick and ran well after I fixed all of the loose wiring. I am not sure whether the truck was already having issues, or it was just an unfortunate blowout of the head gasket. I guess I won't know until it gets opened. We'll see...

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but if you have a rod pocking out and coolant in the oil chances are the block has some internal damage. Not a good situation to say the least.

Of course it's all hard to diagnose online but here are my two theorys.

#1 Rod was on its way out at some point, slightly bent, etc. Rod broke the beam near the big end, swung around whacked the block and cracked the cylinder.

#2 Internal coolant leak, likley the intake manifold, coolant mixed with the oil cause the oill to break down. The crank grabbed a bearing, broke the rod and here you are.

Sounds to me like tthe engine needs to come out ad be torn down for an autopsy to see what is left.

I am considering taking on a few winter projects this year, already have one full build lined up and possibly another with a repaint as well. If the truck still runs shipping via searail to my door is around 500 bux. If it doesn't run it's much more difficult.

Let me know if you need some help and I'm sure we can get it fixed.

Re: New Owner of 92 Ty in Vancouver Area - Hello

well, I did look into the shipping and that is also what I found for prices. Plus the fuel surcharge everything doorstep to doorstep will be $800ish. Then I also have to make it there myself and drive it back. It would be at least 1700-2000 to have it done out there vs out here, but then I also know it will be done right and at least by somebody that knows the truck and stuff. It is definitely a thought, but right now it is going to be difficult to justify the extra $2k. It is not out of the quesion, but it is still $2k that is not a material tangible cost. I would still like to take it at least somewhere to open it up and have a look first before I can actually make that decision. At least I know that it would be in good hands and at least an option. Thanks for the offer and I may take you up on it. I will let you know.

Tony, is it possible to give me an idea and a rough guess on possible costs associated with different senarios by pm me a couple rough estimates? That way it will help me decide what options and things that I need to figure upon for budgetary reasons? I know it would be hard to determine without knowing the extent, but a ballpark best or worst case pricing would help at least the me an idea.

Thanks again for the support and help so far

Chris

Hey Chris,

Sorry to hear about the news. We're also in greater Van (Coquitlam) with my wife's 92 Ty.
If you want to give me a PM with your contact info I can put you in touch with another shipper. It'd probably only be ~$500 to ship to Edmonton but you'd need to arrange to get it to/from their yard. I've used them several times now.

Hope to see you around. I'll be putting the 92 up for sale shortly too if any of you happen to run into somebody looking for a decent DD.
