Hello,

Just wanted to say hi and see if anyone knows anything about this truck. Guy who sold me the truck says he got it on a trade from a California guy. So I test drove the truck and found low oil pressure, overboost problem, and some sort of knocking. There is zero rust on the truck, the interior is pretty good, and paint job is ok. The body has no damage and all cladding looks good (may need to align front pieces but the are not cracked). I drove the truck 3.5 hours home and immediately put it on jack stands. I did a compression check and found one of the cylinders is ~135 with the rest around ~155. So I have already purchased a replacement motor and hopefully will have it running around the new year. I do know the truck was originally green. Also the wheels are HRE 17x11 in the rear and I think 17x9 in the front.

Sorry about the pics. These are from the sale ad and haven't taken any pics since it is in pieces right now.

Re: New ty 1568 TX

General rule of thumb is if the cylinders are all within 10% then things are fine. Your one cylinder is not that far off. What # cylinder on the engine is the low one and what cylinder was it when you did the compression test ie; was it the first one or the last one you checked. Bearing knock is not uncommon with a history of detonation and overboosting (usually the latter leads to the former). You may only need bearings and not a new engine.

Based on your description, that's a smokin price even if you do need engine work. The HRE's are $$$$ to buy and the paint looks fine in the photos. Is that something you can buff & polish and it's good to go?

Re: New ty 1568 TX

I believe it was number 3 that was low and it was the second one I tested. I did test it a couple of times and it had the same results.

I know I did not need a whole new motor but I picked up a long block with forged pistons, comp cam, and vortec heads for 650. I figure even if I was to do a stock rebuild, I would have close to that in it (not knowing what is bad). Also, I felt like the motor was needing some tlc. I found several vacuum leaks, plug wires touching manifolds, and what sounded like a bottom end clunk. I also noticed someone washed down the engine really well and changed all the fluids before I bought it. Knowing most people buy these vehicles to have fun and considering it had 125k, I thought 650 for the motor was a solid investment. On a side note, are the stock torque converters a certain color? The one I have is a blue/green color.

Thanks,
Bobby Strehler

Awesome score! I just saw this one last night on Craigs List. Glad you got it and are going to be doing right by it. Keep us updated.

Re: New ty 1568 TX

Thanks guys. I have already ordered a new silicone vacuum kit and next will be plugs, wires, pcv, cap/rotor, and gaskets for the motor to go back together. I will get some more pics once she is back together.

Re: New ty 1568 TX

I bought a new house, so I had to get her running so she would not have to be towed to the new house. It took a few days but she is running. I need to get a tune and I think I have a turbo that needs to be replaced. I am not going to be spending much time on her in the short term as I have lots to do with the new home. But within the next few months, hopefully I will have a tune, new turbo, and A2A.
