There's just too much information that I'd like to share with you to do it via typing. If you can get the chance we need to arrange a meeting at the Pavilions car show (Indian Bend & the 101 in Scottsdale) on any Saturday night. If you can find a date that's good for you then I can try to rally the troops and we can discuss everything you want to know (and a crapload you probably don't want to know)... ;)

For your reference, the local Phoenix-area AZ SyTy nutcases are myself, Dan (PPI Typhoon) and Nick (nick041881).

Looking forward to meeting with you...

Lets not forget the Glendale contingent - I am in the middle of having my vehicle redone, 1,500 miles on the engine and the transmission. Had stock heads, now I am going for the Vortecs. I hope by the end of October the thing will be ready and all tuned.

Everything stated here so far is good advice. I myself have no knowledge when it comes to Data logging, if we do meet at the Pavilions someday, maybe one of you locals can get me up to speed.

Right now, my engine is working great, even though I have the boost limited to 12# and am not running the 3Bar and the Ultimate or my 50# injectors, as I am breaking the engine in. Only reason I am switching to a Vortec (other than it wont cost me anything) is less likelihood of detonation, otherwise, I would be very happy with the performance thus far, especially when I use the stall converter.

SY/Ty's are very finicky and must be pampered. If you know how to tune, you will be able to save a lot of money and headaches.

Let us know (All the AZ guys) when you are going to the Pavillions. I would like ot come by also.

Thanks for not lumping me in with you nutcases, Brandon

Sorry, if you would like to be inducted you are welcome. :)

I was just rattling off the people I've known and worked with for years... I should make a set of qualifications for becoming a "certified AZ SyTy nut". They might go like this:

- Owned SyTy for at least 5 years
- Been to my house at least 10 times (or vise versa, I've been to yours at least ten times)
- Been to the Pavilions at least 20 times
- Pick one that applies:
----- Built a truck capable of 10-second quarter mile or faster
----- Designed, manufactured and sold at least one SyTy specific item
----- Had motor out of truck at least 3 times

These aren't ironclad stipulations, but they're a start. :D

I've owned my Ty since 1993 but the rest do not apply, and morethna likely would not apply to most. In any event, if you all ever get to the Pavillions, let me know.

i was at the pavilions the 16th but i was WAY WAY late.. showed up at 9:40. Just in time for the police to politely ask me to leave by 10 and then they set up shop infront of the Ty and shot me dirty looks untill we left.. better luck next time i guess. I have a hard time getting way out to 70th street when im driving from 185th ave.

I got out there right around 8:30 and stayed until about 9:00. I didn't see any trucks out there. I'll try to make it out earlier this Saturday if I don't have to work late.

Aweosme - well I'll see you there... I also plan to take my truck out to Firebird Friday night... so can you recommend a good octane booster or a good place to get fuel to add to my 91 octane unleaded??? I dont want any knock my first time out... and I cant get my brakes to hold the truck pat about 4 to 5 psi... the ABS Im sure... any tricks??? Really hoping to run somewhere in the 13's.... or low 14's - it is basically stock, but seems to run really strong.... Advice???

Don't waste your money on octane boosters. Swing by the Home Depot and grab a couple gallons of Xylene (in the paint department) and throw it in your tank. Two gallons will be safe to use with a half tank of gas. Be sure to get a big funnel also, since it's hard to pour the stuff into the tank without getting it everywhere...

As for the launching bit, it's not your ABS, it's just the crappy brakes. Try this to hold more boost at the line.

- Don't worry about your reaction time, just let the light go green and go when you're ready. This method takes time.
- Light up both sets of staging lights.
- Put truck in neutral.
- Literally stand on the brake with your left foot (I pull my seat forward so I can wedge myself for more leverage, my ass isn't even in the seat for this part) while you give the gas a few good revs. This will build up some vacuum assist pressure.
- Let truck come back down to idle and put it in D
- Build boost and go...

In my first truck I could hold 15-18 PSI on the stock brakes, and the launches were wild. My new truck can't seem to hold any before the wheels start spinning. It varies from truck to truck, but the above method will get the best your truck can do without a brake upgrade or transbrake.

Oh...and I call mid-high 14s for your quarter @ FIR... :D

Since this is my second Ty, does that get me inducted?
First one was in 1993....

I figure being glutton for punishment gets me some respect...

Re: New Ty owner in AZ... Awesome site!!

Well I'll give it a try... I have been racing for 20 years... so the R/T is going to mean something... but I'll work it out somehow... so what are the easy brake upgrades?? I hear S-10 rear wheel Cylinders are a good start... any other advice???

And the truck should run low 14's.... it isnt all stock... but I think with these trucks, it is more technique than anything... get em gone and then the truck takes over... atleast that was the case with the Syclone I used to bracket race in NoCal... if it 60ft'd good, it ran good.... when it didnt, you were just mad...

So is this home depot stuff reall safe??? Tell me more about it... and no octane booster is good??? Is there a gas station around with anything over 91 octane???

New to the scene.... but not the game!!!

Thanks!!!- Mike

As is the case with most automatic turbo cars, there's two types of runs. One you'll do for bracket racing and one for your best ET. I know it's hard to ignore your RT in a race, but with anything short of a full-on drag car you'll pretty-much always sacrifice a good launch if you're trying to cut a decent light. This is 100% due to the fact that you don't know what the person you're up against is doing. You can try to wait until the other guy stages before you do your whole routine, but you most likely won't have the time to leave with the optimum amount of boost. If you get set quickly and do your thing you can spend an eternity holding your truck at boost until the lights go down. This is torture on your torque converter and tranny. I've never seen a trans-temp gage spike faster than when doing this. Most of the all-out drag cars use either a transbrake with a crazy-high stall TC, or clutch-based transmissions like the ones made by Liberty. That's wayyy expensive.

Let me reiterate that no "octane booster" you pick up off the shelf at CSK or Autozone is going to do squat. Xylene is very safe as long as you keep the ratio under 4:1 gas:xylene. Xylene doesn't have the lubrication properties that gas has. Lots of people on the board have used xylene with good results. As far as fuel additives go, it's one of the better ways. There's also propane/alky/meth/water injection which IMO works a bit better, but it's a bit more expensive and requires a kit and installation...
