Newbie check-in w/ Syclone #1770

I have tried to sign up a couple of times and finally got confirmation today.
I have always been a fan of the Syclone/Typhoon and got the opportunity to buy one in February of this year. So on to the good stuff...

The truck had been sitting in storage for what appears to have been a few years and I am in the process of trying to work out all of the bugs as well as figure out what has been done to the truck with respect to modifications. Through some research here and another forum I have decided that most of the aftermarket parts are from the now defunct ATR and possibly Kenne Bell, but I am not absolutely certain.

After removing the truck from storage I checked/topped all of the fluids and installed a fresh battery. To my surprise the truck cranked right up and I let it idle for a few minutes to see how long it took for the smoke to clear from the obviously leaking valve stem seals. After letting it idle for about fifteen minutes and the smoke mostly clearing, I racked the truck and changed the oil and replaced then ten year old Avon tires.

Over the course of the next few days I got up enough courage to take it out for a test drive and found a few more items that needed some attention. I found and replaced several rotted vacuum lines, replaced the plugs, cap and rotor all with Delco brand parts, ripped out a bunch of aftermarket stereo wiring and alarm system. The truck ran out reasonably well, but had a miss at lower RPM's and was still smoking a considerable amount so I decided to go ahead and tackle the leaky valve stem seals before I did anything else to the truck.

That is where the fun begins and brings us up to the current issue.

While my tech was replacing the stem seals he called me back to discuss a problem with the truck. He had already replaced the seals on cylinder number one and was moving on to the next cylinder when he discovered that the cylinder would not pump up to hold the valve in place in order to change the seals. After a minute of scratching our heads we both noticed that one of the coolant lines from the intake manifold was bubbling coolant. Crap....

I plan on diving into the top end rebuild next week and would appreciate any insight you guys can offer into the repair and/or the history of the truck.

Thanks and sorry for the long-winded first post,

Matthew

You probably don't want to herat this, but the piston is probably cracked. Number 3 & 4 run the leanest so those usually the one with problems.

Hopefully not. The engine did not exhibit any unusual noises, but stranger things have happened. I will know for sure next week.

Re: Newbie check-in w/ Syclone #1770

Still haven't had a chance to tear into the engine yet.
Any recommendations on what to use as far as gaskets and such? Regular old FelPro Autozone stuff be ok?
Anybody know the history of the truck? I would love to know how this seventh injector setup is supposed to work or if it is even worth fooling with as it obviously isn't working properly now.

Pull it out of there. That's 90s foolishness.

Welcome to the party.

Welcome to the site, you will get plenty of support here....

Re: Newbie check-in w/ Syclone #1770

Does somebody sell a blockoff plate for where the injector mounts? What about where it connects to the fuel rail? I realize I probably sound like a total noob, but there is just so much information here that it's kinda mind-numbing.

Welcome aboard.

I gotta agree with dgoodhue, that motor is going to have to be rebuilt.

Only thing I could find on the truck was this from 1995

Jack Worley called me friday evening. He has Syclone #1770 and has
owned it for about 6 months. He recently moved to Dallas. The truck
has about 44K miles on it

And this:

Jack Worley is forced to sell his Syclone.
The Dallas street-scene will never be the same.

'91 Syclone (VIN 1777, I think) just under 80K miles.
Never had a valve cover off.
Runs high 11's
TE62e turbo
ATR downpipe, and exhaust
ATR external wastegate
Dynomax Ultraflow (round) muffler
New Syclone Transmission a couple months ago
Precision Industries high-stall lockup torque convertor
S-10 non-power rear brake cylinders
battery in bed
cool-air intake where battery used to be
Two sets of wheels/tires:
GSCs on 17-inch chrome ZR-1 wheels
Drag radials on stock wheels
Cyberdyne fuel pressure guage above light switch
VDO 30 psi boost guage above left speaker
GReddy PRofec
Bed cover replaced about a year ago
Body in great shape - TX truck - no rust!
got great paint job a couple years ago
has a couple small dings in hood
'92 Syclone floor mats
BGC adjustable FP regulator
Alarm
Aftermarket stereo
Dark tinted windows
Throttle body air foil
160-degree thermostat
Custom PROM
Underdrive pully kit
New Dynotech front prop shaft
lowered 1.5 inches in rear
Power mirror conversion... not wired-up, yet.

He needs $17K, and he's pretty firm on the price.
If interested, give him a call after 6 pm (central) (972) 516-4989

Where the injector mounts usually is an aftermarket spacer. Just remove the spacer.

Awesome. That's the kind of info I am looking for. Thanks

Re: Newbie check-in w/ Syclone #1770

Looks like somebody has been in it since, because it has roller rockers and from what I can tell it came with stamped rockers. Also the heads are casting# 10238181, is that stock to this vehicle? My research says yes..

Got the injector driver out in a few minutes between customers.
This thing has me giddy as a school girl.haha
