Newbie to the Sy/Ty world, but long-time GN owner!

Hello all!

I'm thinking seriously about joining the ranks of the Typhoon owners, and so far, this site seems to be the best place to get real-world information on these great trucks.

I'm no stranger to GM turbo cars, as I've owned an '87 Grand National for several years.

One of the things I've been trying to learn about is just how much hardware and know-how crosses over from the Buick 3.8 Turbo to the Chevy 4.3 Turbo. And from what I've seen so, far, it looks like not very much!

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself and ask that y'all go easy if I have a few seemingly stupid questions!

Welcome, I'm basically a noob I've had my sy almost a year. The only thing I think is the same is they are turbo 6's and they are Government motors now.

That would be nice, but I probably can't do both. I'm considering putting the feelers out on trading the GN for a Typhoon. I just need to learn more about what I would be getting into!

Getting rid of the gn would be a HUGE mistake. Plus the gn is worth more than a ty. If you are patient like me you will find a ty for cheap enough and enjoy both. Plus id one breaks you can drive the other just my :2cents:

Welcome new guy, your GN is hot, don't get rid of it to get a Ty big mistake. On the other hand getting a Sy isn't a bad idea :lol:

I appreciate the advice, and I'm not totally decided on this either. Thing is, I can basically support one "fun" car. And because of the fact that we live in the mountains and get snow and stuff, an AWD truck might make better sense. It would also allow me to drive it all year around, unlike the GN, which is parked from November thru April.

Obviously, I'm not looking to go off-road, but having a truck that hauls ass and can be driven with a couple of inches of snow on the road is appealing.

Having both would be great,I own a turbo buick and a sy . None of the hardware is the same but is the same general idea syty's have alittle more going on under the hood and is tighter in there. I work on both of mine and syty engines def way harder to do but whatever. Good luck Buick looks great

The Typhoon definitely seems more complex with the water-to-air intercooler and what looks like even more emissions stuff.

Is there any benefit to converting to an air-to-air setup...Maybe even a front mount?

They dont leak coolant, and tend to run cooler. I like my liquid dooled system b/c its different than the gn

I would probably do the same if I got one. Silly as it sounds, a bunch of the GN guys have had good luck with the $200 eBay intercooler in a front mount configuration. The only hard part (at least on the GN) is getting the pipes right.

I with u 100% I had a 2.3 ford turbo mustang with one of those ran just fine but is was not as fast as these.
It looked very clean under the hood. I might keep the ac out and the bracket for it also, someone on here sells a kit, that will free up alot of room.
