no brake lights; lights, turn signals, fuses fine

This has just recently occured, I have no brake lights! When I turn my lights on, the rear lights up, the turn signals work, so i think the bulbs are fine. replacing the bulbs gives the same problem. I have checked the fuses under the dash (hazards and brake), and the two buttons above the brake pedal. Is there an inline fuse somewhere that could be blown? I can't drive the truck until this issue is resolved :( , anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

Have you checked the grounds on the rear frame rail and the wire harness back there? Have you have any recent work done to the truck?

chite, i know what this is i've had it happen before but for the friggin life of me i can't remember what the hell i changed (not on my truck, a regular s-blazer IIRC, when i worked in a garage) exactly what your describing, everything works, but for some reason no brake lights. it's something stupidly simple. i want to say it could be the blinker module, since there's only one, dual filliment, bulb for everything. check all your wires under the bed, be sure there not cut, and check to see where the last place your getting power is. run and grab a blinker relay there only a few bucks and try that. if i remember exactly what it was at work today i'll post it up after work. sorry dude :-\

On the turn signal junction block on the steering column, there is a connector. This connects all of the wires that run up the column. The white wire gives you brake lights. This connection come loose or is burned right there.

Turn on your emergency flashers. Step on the brake. If the flashing stops , the brake switch is good.

Checked the wiring harness and grounds, they are connected. I had a ZQ8 steering box put on, but I dont think the steering column was removed. I looked underneath the truck where they put it in, doesnt look like they accidently cut any wires, they are pretty careful guys.

I'm thinking its something stupidly simple also, i'll pick up a blinker module tonite. hopefully itll come back to you

Re: no brake lights; lights, turn signals, fuses fine

sorry man, i know if i had a wireing diagram infront of me i could get it, I'm actualy really good with electronics. the circut isn't that complex. fuse, to brake switch, through blinker module for left right maniuplation/hazards, out to brakes (in a nut shell, it's been a few years since i've done electrial work on an S series) but if the blinkers are workin, then the wires to the lights are good, they run off of the same wire/bulb. You've got a relay bad. Do you have a test light? for stuff like this, there worth the trucks weight in gold.

Anyone? are there seperate relays for blinker and hazzard in these trucks? I can't recall. I've seen some GM's that have seperate modules, and the hazzard module controlls the brake lights. but if your hazzards are working it'd kinda rule that out...

sounds like multifunction switch or wiring problem to multi sw. like kentuc said. we dont use a blinker module so the parts guy is probably going to give you a funny look when you ask for one.

Until you do this, you will not have brake lights!....This connector is under the dashboard.

You know whats funny about this, if i ask for a blinker-stat or relay or any of the 30 or so other names for that damn round thing with 2 prongs, i get a funny look. unfortunatly there arn't but 2 napa's around here, and they both close at 5, and i work till 430 at the earliest, and either way i'd never make it there before they close. anywho the autozone droids can't understand what i'm talking about untill i call it a "blinker Module" (ps my spelling sux) so thats just what i've grown to call it over the years. guess thats the onlything listed in there allmighty computer, god-forbid they ever pick up a book

hmm around here everyone calls it a flasher. cadillac probably has a blinker module but thats because everything on a freakin cadillac has to have a computer

ill check it tomorrow, didnt have a chance today. is it in a relay box type deal?

Re: no brake lights; lights, turn signals, fuses fine

on an update, i figured it out. the culprit was ridiculous. i spent over 4 hours looking in the steering column, under the dash, fuse box, under the truck, the rear end of the truck, and finally got the inkling to check the main wiring at the brake switch. the brake switch was fine, but the connection to the wire on the back was loose! wow i felt retarded. how simple was that? :rotf:
