No heat/Thermostat replaced

So this morning truck has no heat all of a sudden. Worked fine the other day. Checked everything and decided to change thermostat. No problem. Now I can't get it to "burp" and still no heat. I know some cars/trucks are a pain, and some have tricks. I don't think the TY has a bleeder so what is the truck? Or what had worked in the past for you guys? Had the front end jacked up for a bit while topping off but never got the "burp".... Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Bryan A

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Did you fill the cooling system at the thermostat opening before you install the t stat
Then install the t stat and upper hose and top it off through the radiator cap?
This is how I do it and I never have an issue. Aslo with the truck running and radiator cap off I will squeeze the upper hose to burp the system sometimes.
Also the thermostat is installe properly right? I know it is a dumb question but I have seen them installed upside down. Good luck.

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Yup I did all these things above. I guess I'm gonna just Jack up the front a bit and let it run til she burps. Never know if there's a trick someone knows. Just gotta be patient I guess. Sunday mornings in winter are made for this

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

I always drill a small hole in the t-stat's in all my cars.

I haven't had a single problem since doing that many many years ago.

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Please explain?? In the housing and add a screw? Or in the TStat itself??

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Glad to help.

I swapped to a 180 recently.
And hot wired the intercooler pump at the same time.

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Ya, X2 all the above. With or without the little hole (and t-stat correct side up, sorry) fill at the rad and leave the cap off. Start and after a few minutes you should feel the heater lines getting warm. That means water is circulating. With a 190* stat you're gonna wait awhile for it to open. Then as soon as it does it pulls water from the rad and closes again. Takes a little patience. Yes I have a hole in my stat as well.

Once done let cool overnight and check the rad again. It will probably need to be topped off.

That's what these wonderful trucks are exceptionally good at-trying our patience every chance they get! :rotf:

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

OK so I thought she burped... NO heat still. I bought that Spill free funnel and am gonna try that now after I drill the hole in the stat. I read somewhere that there are block bleeders? Anyone have a pic of where they are located?? Thanks again guys!!!!

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Maybe the thermostat isn't opening. You can pull it and test it to
Make sure by dropping it into a pot of water and bringing it to temp
And make sure it is opening. Sounds like you have a faulty thermostat .
Good luck!!

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Is the engine actually warming to operating temperature?
AND you're not getting heat?

Or is the engine getting hotter than the thermostat setting and you're still not getting heat?

I'd hate to hear you went through all this work chasing a bad thermostat.
But it definitely happens!

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Well, whenever I change a thermostat I always check to make sure it's functional. Simply place in water/heat with a thermometer to check when it opens . Hate to go through the whole process of changing it, to find that you have the wrong temp or bad thermostat . Then of course make sure it's not upside down when you install it. Been down that rode! The only other issue could be a blocked or bad heater core.......

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

I'll bet on a improper install, as the OP stated that he had heat before changing the T-stat.

Re: No heat/Thermostat replaced

Stat is correct, in fact I put a 180 in to see if it would help. Drilled the small hole. Used the spillfree funnel and let it bubble and bubble til it stopped, and basically still no heat. The temp gauge barely hits 140-150, I know theyre not accurate. But the motor doesn't even get that hot, definatly not overheating. Runs perfectly too. F'N weird.... And ive had difficult ones in the past where they wouldn't kick heat for a while, id just be driving and boom, heat. Ive been doing this for like 20 years, that's why im completely stumped here. And it HAD heat when I got the truck, but found a leak in the heater hose, so I fixed it, haven't had heat since.

Again, are the heater hoses getting hot? Or even warm? If not then go back to what you did to fix the leak. Something is blocking flow. Unless something is actually blocking flow the heater will self-purge. Just sitting there idling the motor is prolly not going to go much hotter. Try blocking the radiator with newspaper or something to block airflow and see if it warms completely. Check actual water temp with a cooking thermometer in the rad neck.

And one other thought based on your comment "they wouldn't kick heat for a while, id just be driving and boom, heat." that doesn't sound like a water flow issue. More like a heater control, maybe a stuck damper, issue.
