O2 sensor

Mr. Keith
Is it necessary for the O2 sensor to be connected with an open loop chip like the Phil Long chip? For me, enough is enough and I am about to dump my truck into the Atlantic. It would probably be cheaper....Problem? She idles perfect for about 2-3 minutes and then idles like crap, eventually stalling out. If that isnt enough, She wont start back up without a little prodding. So, does my O2 sensor need to be connected when the ecm is running in open loop? Need help soon or she gets deep six'd..........

Re: O2 sensor

you need to find the problem, i doubt it the O2 sensor if the chip is running open loop. need to run data master and look at your fp and vacum. sounds kinda like its running lean or rich. whats your base fp?

Re: O2 sensor

Check your spark plugs as well , my truck ran like you describe when my plugs were bad .

Re: O2 sensor

Just replaced the plugs, gapped at .028. I will replace the wires real soon. I had the right injectors (50#) put in not too long ago. I have my fp set at 42psi with the vac line connected. Ths truck has been sick ever since the new engine was put in her 3 yrs ago. I'm getting a wbO2 but I am not feeling good about buying more crap for this thing that appears to have me chasing ghosts....No codes, the plugs removed were not fowled...I need a sedative right now..

Re: O2 sensor

does it act the same on all the p long chip settings ? try turning the fp down a little . without a wb o2 you really dont know whats going on , so one is advised on any truck .

Thats one thing that you shouldnt feel guilty about throwing $$$ torwards . Now thinking back , I did have phils chip when i had the 50's , and thats the same way my truck acted .Although it fouled plugs after 10-15 minutes . After fighting with it for a couple months I went to the 75's and it runs/idles as good as my stock ty .

Thats the problem with an off the shelf chip and the inconsistant 50# ers . I do believe phil lives in sc , you should go see him if you can , maybe he can make a few changes to better suit your truck . Dont give up . Ive been there before ...

Re: O2 sensor

42lbs with the vacum line conected? i think its suppose to be 42ish lbs with the line disconnected. that would make it run rich

Really? I will turn down the fp to see if she will run. I remember having a problem with that before but I had stock injectors w/ phil long chip unknowingly. I do have dm files I could email to any one who could tell me if there is something going on....

Re: O2 sensor

I brought the fp down to 42 and she runs and idles well. I do have a miss which I hope to resolve when I change out the plug wires. However, when I rev the engine to about 2.3- 3k, she will die out on me. Maybe I need to turn the pressure down a bit more but I will get the wires and O2 sensor first. Thanks for the fp tip. At least I can say I'm moving a little closer to a better running vehicle.

Re: O2 sensor

sounds like you fouled your new plugs out. i've fouled a set in less than an hour before try to sort things out. when you get wires, get the tune up kit from turbo time. those are the best wires i've ran. i trashed a set of 70 dollar accel wires in under 30 days. after that tune up package all i ever did was plugs ever few months till i popped the motor. invest in a wobble spark plug socket, that was the best 20 dollars i've ever spent.

Cant seem to find a wobble socket out here, not even at Sears...
