Octane woes

We no longer have 92 octane available here in the Anchorage area. I would like to use xylene. I don't need 30% mixture. I just want to get to the 92 or better octane for the street. I was thinking perhaps 2 gallons of xylene for each fill up with 90 octane fuel. Should I also be using mystery oil as well, or is this only for higher concentrations of xylene?

I only have about a month and a half before I put it away for the winter. Just need to get some help with xylene in the mean time. I don't have the money for an alky kit anyways.

Xylene is 117 octane. A gallon and a half under a full tank of 90 will give you a little over 92.

So 7.5 % xylene (1.5gal) mixed with 90 octane fuel nets 92ish octane based on 20 gallon tank capacity.

I have always seen xylene quoted as 116 octane... Anywho, you will only need roughly two gallons of xylene to 18 gallons of 92 octane to make a 94.4 blend. The math to figure how may points you stand to gain is as follows:

18 gallons of 92 is 18 X 92=1656
2 gallons of xylene 116 is 2 X 116=232
1656 + 232=1888 divided by the total number of gallons, (20 in this case) equals 94.4

When I race my truck, I only run with the tank half full to reduce weight. My blend is as follows:

10 gallons of 93 is 10 X 93=930
3.5 gallons of xylene 116 is 406
930 + 406=1336 divided by 13.5 gallons equals 98.96 octane

Xylene by me was almost $38 for a five gallon can two months ago. With that 2 gallons to 18 gallons of gas, you should net two and a half full tanks at 94.4 octane. HTH's

D'oh! Just REREAD your post and saw that you NO longer have 92 octane... In that case, 1.5 gallons to 18 gallons of 90 will give you a 92 octane blend.

Sort of along the same lines, sorry about the thread hijacking...

Is there a probe or a method to test what octane of gas you have laying around? For example, if I have 20 gallons of gasoline in my garage and I've forgotten what octane it is, is there a way to test it?

Sounds like the way to go for me. I can get 5 gallon containers for 35 dollars.
