Odometer quit working

Hi All, I did a search and found the thread http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=25329 but no one ever posted how they fixed the odometer. Well my trip odometer quit about 6 months go, then the odometer quit last Thursday and the speedometer still works. I have called and gone buy several places that said it would cost somewhere around $500 to fix but I found a place on the internet that could fix/restore the cluster for around $230. So my question is did anybody get the odometer fixed? If so how and how much? One more thing, if I remove the cluster will the truck still start and drive? I won’t be driving on the street just moving it around the yard.

Thanks a bunch

Re: Odometer quit working

as far as i know it will be able to function without the Guages in the truck, also i believe that the problem could reside in the white box that is attached to your ECU housing, that controlls the speed and mileage etc.. If the problem is somewhere else i wouldnt be able to help you since i havent experienced the problem 1st hand, check grounds and check the connectors to the white box on the compter??? hthal - Hope to help A Little

I've never fixed one. Just didn't care. I have driven many S-10's w/o the cluster in. One shorted some wires wile running. I'm not saying it was the missing cluster that did it, but more likly the 15yr old kid that thought he knew more about wiring than GM. (yes I was 15 at the time)

both the meters have small electric motors that drive them (usually they burn out). I know at atlanta speedo they have repaired them for me in the past, not a big deal.

The speedomer, trip and odometer all get the same information to the cluster.
Either the motors quit working or better yet the gears pop off due to the rough treatment from the lowered suspension. Pull out the cluster and take a look.

Has anybody replaced their own motor? IIRC when I looked at my cluster the last time it was out, there was no easy way to access the motors without taking the faces off. Wouldn't that then require removing the needles as well? If so, how do you get them back on accurately?

Re: Odometer quit working

My odometer quit so I have just been using my trip odometer. I checked into getting it fixed. The company wanted me to send in the complete cluster set to fix it. I thought that sucked. I wanted to fix it my self like I do most everything on my truck (I sort o want to know how everything works).

If I knew what drove the motor on the odometer, I could test it out of the truck and figure if it is the incoming signal or the motor it's self.

Does anyone know the part number for the odometer? I assume GM used these parts in most of the vehicles in the 90s.

My trip meter is the only thing not working in mine. It sucks cause I have to either remember the milage or write it down to figure out mpg when I'm on a trip.

I too wanna know how to fix this myself.

Re: Odometer quit working

I have some spare cluster parts, if needed.

My trip meter went out as well. Seems like a common problem. I just replaced the whole cluster with a new one.

Can anyone help help us to fix the odometer our selves without sending it off?

Re: Odometer quit working

i have had the same problem on my typhoon's trip and my daily driver (grand damnit). Both were the the main drive gear which is the first one had a small hair line crack and was slipping on the shaft> i couldn't get any one to sell me a gear so i very carefully super glued it together and to the shaft, it has worked for about 5k so far in my grand am havent drivein the ty soo much yet

I'm going to head up to the dealer today to see if they have any part numbers or anything on just gears and what is involved in doing this our self. I'll post my findings when I get them. (if at all.. )

Re: Odometer quit working

last time I checked on this the cluster itself was the only service item at the dealer. ie they wont sell any internal parts.

Re: Odometer quit working

I wonder if some of the odometer parts are interchangable with regular S-10 clusters or other GM products.

Sy #308 I just got has the same issue, so curious what others find out.

Holy shit, something that small and plastic still cost $28 + shipping

And I thought the little selector vavle to stop the ac leaks we have at $14 was nuts..

That should be like a $4 part with a stamp for shipping. Dave, I'm gonna try and find that out as well.

Re: Odometer quit working

I didn't really look at that page before. I guess $28 is quite pricy for a plastic gear, but may be cheaper than buying used clusters from other cars though. I fortunately don't have that problem. My Ty had an issue with its trip odometer, I would suspect this is a high mileage problem.

It a little off topic, but I search around that site and found the glass panels LCD for the 80's Corvette dash's. The are easy to crack if you don't pay strict attention to reasssembly (I cracked one, before I realized), I thought they were discontinued. The price are through the roof, since a set is, 795-875 and that doesn't include the electronics which has its own issues. Usually a Good used Cluster is 250-300

Re: Odometer quit working

I went up to the dealer, and they too have to send them off to have them replaced. They didnt give me a price but the guy I talked to said the reason was because GM doesnt want to many people messing with the cluster and maybe changing the milage in cars/trucks. (which I can understand... kinda) :(

Re: Odometer quit working

I just looked at an old cluster I have and I have the gear that sits on the odometer. the rest of it I have sold off. if anybody needs this send me $15 and it's yours. odometer has 40k miles on it I think
