oil leak?

hey, i was wondering if anyone had a problem with their oil plug.

i'm not sure where my leak is coming from, but i have a feeling it's from the plug. i have a metal plate that is under the oil tank and it seems to be dripping oil. i'm not really sure though if it's coming from the plug or somewhere else.

does anyone know if our sy/ty's plug ever have problems? is there a nylon/rubber washer on the plug that gets worn out?

any help is appreciated.

thanks, Mike C

Its probably the oil cooling line from the turbo. I think its a common thing. Is it real bad, are you seeing oil spots on the ground where you park?

Just clean it up under there and try and see where its coming from.

hey scott...

is it typical? did you have this problem? i can't really tell where it's coming from. but yea, it's dripping pretty bad. i'd say i get about a 2" puddle everytime i let it sit...

argh... always another problem once one is fixed.

thanks scott,
Mike

yeah I never fixed mine though. It wasn't leaking that bad, I never saw anything on the ground.

Best thing to do would be to get it up on a hoist, wipe it all down, and try to see where its coming from.

Yeah, it could be the oil return line for the turbo. My truck only has 50K miles on it and the rubber hose near the inlet on the pan is definitely seeping. Anyone know how much the replacement part is from GMC?

Dudes, the oil is either leaking from the distributor shaft seal, the oil pan gasket, the valve cover gaskets, or the lower intake. If you have a leak from one of these areas, oil will make its way down to the drain plug. I don't think it's leaking from your drain plug. Mine was leaking down the drain plug too, but it turned out to be from the lower intake.

An old trick is to clean off the under side as good as possible(w/o using high pressure water for the sake of the electronics) after removing the skidplate. Let it all dry w/o running it then spray it down(the affected area) with Desenex or some other kind of foot powder spray. This fine white powder spray will show where the leak is coming from better than anything else I've seen. The more you can narrow it down before the less area you have to spray. Good luck

hey sy2185 could you explaine more.

do you just throw the powder on the engine, or from underneath?? you just get foot powder from any retail store?? i assume it is white, and it will then turn to black when oil starts dripping?

thanks.
