Oil Priming Issue

I've put in a new engine, was able to oil prime it perfectly, I had oil gushing out of the turbo line feed. I then put in the distributor and turned the engine over with the starter, spark plugs removed and no oil out of the turbo feed line. So I then removed the dizzy put the priming tool back in with the electric drill and got no oil coming out of the turbo line. At this point I said WTF and removed the priming tool then put it back in repeated and oil started coming out. Repeated putting the dizzy back in and no oil from the feed line.

I'm not sure if I have a bad oil pump but it is the from RPM and I've used it in the past wit no issues, it just seems something is not engaging correctly in it. The dizzy and priming tool definitely are inserted correctly. Not really sure what to do at this point but repeat the process.

Re: Oil Priming Issue

I hate to ask this but is the dist fully seated? When cranking does the dist turn? You could check the pin that attaches the dist gear to the shaft although I think the gear drives the oil pump shaft directly and the pin only drives the dist itself. But up inside the gear is the piece that drives the pump. Is that damaged somehow? Measure the distance from where the dist sits on the manifold to the pump drive shaft and check that the dist is going down far enough.

The dizzy is definitely fully seated because it is flush with the manifold and cannot go further and there is not Damage to where it connects the oil pump shaft. But yes the dizzy turns when the engine cranks over.

Re: Oil Priming Issue

On the face of it if you get oil pressure with the priming tool and not with the dist then something is wrong with the dist or the pump drive shaft is to short. Hence my mention of measuring the depth.

I've used this same extra setup and parts with the last build so that's why I'm puzzled, the dizzy is a real edlebrock but I am going to put the stock unit back in to see if that makes a difference.

I did do that and they are identical, the tooth in the center or the gear isn't notched on the edelbrock as the stock one is though.

All good here, I wasn't turning the engine over enough, I cranked it a few times after I swapped the dizzy's back in and got oil pressure on my gauge and flowing out of the turbo line. Appreciate the help and especially you Don!

No worries. I wuz just dreaming up ideas and throwing 'em out there.
