open loop, do i need O2 sensor?

i am trying to figure out if i still have a problem or not.

the chip is set for open loop per the closed loop enabled maxed out.

but the sy was not wanting to start, i had to crank it for 7-8 secs about 4-5 times, and this happened across a couple of days(ened up having to jump start truck a couple times, battery died trying to turn over)
well one day while i had DM hooked up, i noticed that my afr target window was reading 10 until lc-1 warmed up(even after a calibration)
so then i waited for LC-1 to warm up before i started to crank engine, and the truck seemed to turn on flawlessly.

does the ecu look at 02 even in open loop???

As far as I know, it wont use the O2 data for anything. You will get a check engine light if it doesnt get the signal from the sensor though.

If you have the ability to control open/closed loop, then you have the ability to turn that MIL light off in the chip.

can anybody verify this 100%.
i am tired of having to be jump started.

I drove my truck for a week without a o2 in. It drove fine. I had a check light and it threw a 13 code. But out of the 10 times I drove it, the code only came up 3 times?? I am running a phil chip.(open loop)

The ECU looks at the O2 sensor in open loop, but doesn't use the information. You can remove it and stick a plug in the hole if you want. It won't affect performance. You'll need to disable the associated malfunction flags to prevent the check engine light from coming on.

You need to look somewhere else for your starting problems. Is your battery okay? vacuum leaks? grounds okay? recent tuneup?

thanks jim, that was exactly what i needed to know.

i posted in the engine tech about slow starting, everything is pointing towards fuel pump relay, but now i know i dont need 02 powered up, so that definitely will help me eliminate that as a possibility.
thanks

It's easy to jumper the fuel pump relay to see if that's the problem.
