Opinions on this tranny build

My dad talked to this guy at a car show once and it he said he builds "performance 700R4s" my dad explained to him the basic jif of syty's awd turbo aka not a 350 corvette motor blah blah. Anyway the point is it seems like a cheap price compared to going allout with a 700r4 or swapping to an 80e and at this point i really just want to beable to drive my ty around and get it painted not beat the shit out of it drag racing for awhile would this sound like something you guys would do if you were in my situation. Poor College kid suffering from syty withdrawal or do you feel like it would be a waste of money. 650 to build tranny 200 more to let him install it was the quoted price.

a 700 can be built to hold up to a lot of punishment but it comes with a price my dad owns a transmission shop i have a little over 500 dollars in parts with out a converter a 200r4 is only for 2wd applications theres no way to make it a 4wd

I don't know it seems like a pretty decent price last year I paid 700-850 installed on my old sy 700r4 and it is still going strong. If he knows what he is doing and you are not hard launching every 12 seconds you should be okay.

my 2 cents

Compare to a stock SyTy that kit is basic rebuild with softer shift kit with a couple common mod. Your Ty (modified motor/70mm Turbo) is going to go throught that transmission very quickly.

If he honors the warranty, you'd be fine. Otherwise, you spend $850 for a soon-broken trans.

Even if he did honor it the first time, my bet is that he wouldn't the second time. You do see some guys that back their work now and then, but it's getting rarer all the time.

To do a good SyTy rebuild will cost you at least $700 in parts. (That's not including custom billet stuff, or planetaries). Like everything else, you get what you pay for.

Go econo on the 80e. Make your own crossmember. Buy the adapter + shaft from Blake.
Get a decent core trans cheap... (ie, shop around, check classifieds) and freshen it up
yourself. Get a GM controller + harness out of a junker.

Patience and a bit of leg work can get you some good deals.

I agree 100%. Only problem is that Blake doesn't like to split anything up.. He always wants to sell a "kit" that comes with everything.

Go 80E. Your mods are 422 cam, vortecs etc - well you can read. That is a fast truck man. You always see people here trashing 700R4s and wishing they gpt a 4L80E.

Go easy while you get all the bits together.... :2cents:

DITTO 100% That is why my truck was off the road for over two years after transmission #2 went (changed jobs and took a big paycut, toys got put on the back burner). I got a great "deal" from a very reputable transmission shop near me that upon tear down revealed several "surprises". Reused old rusty parts out of another transmission. Basic seals that are included in ANY rebuild kit were not replaced my old ones were just reused. And "performance enhancing mods" that would have made it break sooner... YMMV but the cheap "built" 700-R4 in these trucks is an oxymoron IMHO.

I would look at it this way if you shell out $850 for that transmission and break it, what are you going to do if they don't honor their warranty? Be sure to FULLY understand what is and what isn't covered under the said warranty. Sometimes if the vehicle id forced induced, the warranty doesn't apply... Bottom line is if you break it and they don't honor the warranty, you are going to be out $850 that could have went towards a "legit" tried and true build. With all the horror stories that surround the transmissions in these trucks, I wouldn't be tempted by the cheap build

To bad you dont live close to Little Rock The guy here charge $500 for a bench build(parts and labor) And I have beat the everloving shit out of it. Still going strong. Now that I said something it may quit tomarro. But I have put 30,000 miles on it with the truck set on kill low 11's and now mid 10's soon to be low 10's.

Re: Opinions on this tranny build

I agree with most everyone else here, go with the 80. Ild be surprised if a 700 put up with your build for a decent amount of time. As far as cheap goes, if you do as much as you can by yourself you can save buttloads of money. My last trans I spent a total of $600 on parts and another $450 for my convertor. Trans feels awsome so far but Im just running a 20g and stock motor.
