Picked up a Typhoon, needs some work...

High guys. I came across a Typhoon for sale that I could not pass up the chance to own. The truck is completely stock as far as I can tell, it just has higher mileage. and a very grimy engine.

It has some idle problems and hesitates, but seems to run OK once you are above idle, at say 1500RPM. I am planning to check the plugs, look for more vac leaks, check out the fuel pressure etc etc.

But right now I was wondering if anyone could tell my exactly how the vac lines should be connected to ...I guess it is the boost controller. The small device attached to the top of the turbo, the vac lines to it were dried hard, cracked and fell off. I nailed the gas on the drive home and the boost gauge went way above 15 PSI, then the engine cut out and the check engine light came on. I replaced the vacuum fittings, but I wante to make sure they were on right.

There is a long vac line that comes off the passenger side goes to the wastegate actuator, and there is a short line on the driver side that goes right to the turbo housing, but when I was replacing those I saw a second port below this one on the drivers side that was not hooked up. I assume this is correct?

That port came with a little foam filter from the factory. Most are missing but it's not a problem.

The third port on the waste gate is for a little air filter. It doesn't have to be connected to anything. There are pictures around here somewhere? I have not heard of a turbo over boosting when you have such a huge vacuum issue (waste gate basically not hooked up). Was there a manual boost knob or valve hooked up before. Is the Actuator rod adjusted correctly?

There are no other boost controllers other than the stock one, nothing else is attached to the turbo or wastegate. I don't know about the actuator rod adjustment, I have not had a chance to look at it yet, I just picked the Typhoon up last night.

The line on the drivers side of the actuator was basically broken completely off, the passenger side one was still attached, but cracked bad. I figured with the vacuum line broken off / disconnected, there would be no vacuum to open the wastegate to bleed off the excess boost, correct?

Anyway, with the lines as they are now (fixed), it seems to max out at just under 15 PSI on the gauge.

Also, all the vacuum fittings have tiny metal band clamps crimped on them. Is that factory?

That vacuum diagram does not show the boost controller, but they do have a picture of it in the beginning of the gallery;

and that is how mine is connected now.

The pictures in the thread don't have anything to do with the boost controller as far as I can see either.

Also, I already tried the search function. I got a couple hundred threads about turbo upgrades, and aftermarket boost controllers. I wasn't sure is those would necessarily be connected the same as a stock one, that's why I asked.

That's OK now, so I am off to find out why the intercooler pump isn't working...

yea you are good on the lines they are correct mine is totally stock and mine is routed the same and the metal clamps are stock mine still has them

It seems to be running better now. It is still missing, but not bad enough that the whole truck is shaking quite as bad. I think the spark plug wires are still the original ones! I'll try to get a new set tomorrow and see if that helps any.

The intercooler pump is shot.

The engine bay was quite dirty, so I spent most of this evening cleaning thigs up...

Here is a before picture..

If your lines are routed the same as that picture above (which was my stock turbo) then your good with the solenoid.. Common for stock ic pumps to die, they barely pushed any water anyways check the vendors section for a johnson or shurflow ic pump.

Remember these trucks had a little rough idle from the factory

Yeah, I have been reading up on these things for a little while. I know the pumps aren't great. When I was looking at it tonight it looks pretty small physically, compared with the ones on my old Lightning and now on the GTO.

I read they usually idle rough, but how rough is too much? It was shaking so bad that if the hood was up while it was running, the under hood light would flicker on and off.

Whats the last four #'s of your vin? It looks like you have a rasberry Ty.

Yep, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to notice. It's 1312. See the VIN Carfax forum.

Welcome to the board

! Are you getting your boost readings from teh in dash stock one or an aftermarket one? The stock boost gauge tends to lack in the accuracy depatment sometimes...

Definately give it a full tune up especially regarding the ignition since it cause so many problems in these trucks. Sounds like you have done some research on these things so you may already be aware that these is a fuse for the intercooler pump behind the alternator:

If it is the stocker, it probably is dead

Re: Picked up a Typhoon, needs some work...

Thanks for the welcome. I've been lurking for years. I considered buying a Syclone right before I got the Lightning, but they wanted $12k and it had 120k miles and had been rolled and rebuilt. The drivers door was the only original sheet metal. They even replaced the cab roof on that one!

I am just going by the in dash boost gauge. I'm not suprised they are inaccurate, but relatively speaking the boost maxes out much lower now than it did before fixing it. I don't think this has been modified at all. Everything looks to be original, with the exception of an aftermarket alarm, I don't think it has been touched except for fluid changes.

I found the pump fuse, it was blown. I replaced it and it didn't blow again, but still didn't get any coolant flow. I crawled underneath and unplugged the pump. I have battery voltage at the pump connector, but the pump is silent. When I read resistance across the pump it is 8 Meg ohms, so I am sure it's dead.

I want to look at the Torsion bars next. The driver's side seems to be sitting 1/2" or so lower than the passenger side at the front.

Re: Picked up a Typhoon, needs some work...

Here is a quick update if anyone is reading...

Regarding the Torsion bars, for some reason one was adjusted almost all the way up, and the other side all the way down. I cranked the both a few turns back to the middle of the range and evened them out, with the front sitting about 27.5" from the ground to edge of the wheel well opening on each side. I guess it should have an aligment done now.

Checked out the rear suspension. The fuse was blown for the leveling pump. I replaced it and the pump runs and shuts off, then restarts every couple of minutes, and the rear ride height never changes. I guess it has a leak. I pulled the fuse for now so the battery doesn't die from the pump running.

On some advice from a GN guy at work, I pulled off the throttle body and sure enough the throttle plates and bores were pretty gunked up. I cleaned that all up, and took a peek in the upper intake while the TB was off. I saw some more gunk formations just below the throttle holes. As I picked at it I came to realize those were supposed to be open ports (EGR) so I took off the upper intake to clean it out good, especially those EGR ports that were completely blocked. I'm not sure how my wife feels about a "SYCLONE 4.3 TURBO" manifold sitting in the downstairs bathtub right now...

Good job, your going in the right direction.

For the IC pump, I took out my stocker and replaced it because it wasnt working. Before I threw it out, I decided to take a look at it. I opened it up and spun the saft. I sprayed some silicone lube on it, and spun it some more. I seemed fine so I re-assembled it. When I plugged it in it worked fine. I let it run dry off my battery charger for about a half hour and it still works. The stock pump isnt great by any means, but you may want to see if you can fix yours.

There's a thread on here somewhere where I used a $25 Harbor Freight water pump and instelled it in my Ty- with pics. It required almost no modifications even though its nowhere near the same size or shape as the stocker. It flows way more water!

Re: Picked up a Typhoon, needs some work...

Thanks. I will look at that for sure.

I am currently stuck waiting for the intake gasket to come in so I can get the top end back together. I am anxious to finally drive it.
