Pictures thread crashing?

My browser isn't crashing, but it is locking up quite a bit on that thread.

Re: Pictures thread crashing?

I'm guessing it has to do with the size of the pictures being posted and the forum plugin to resize the pictures.

I would suggest anyone posting pictures, size them down to 800x600 first, then post them.

It's just the plugin chewing on the resize.

we are on a shared server, that plugin requires alot of resources to run, thus things crashing..

the server can't handle resizing all of the pics each time someone goes into the thread.

Glad it's not just me then...

I just wanted to know if anyone took a pic of the hot blonde at Hooters dammit. I might have to go back - I want a Green Card!

Re: Pictures thread crashing?

That plugin sucks.. You guys should ditch it..

We wouldn't need the plugin if people would size pics appropriately before posting them. Not everyone has a 30" widescreen cinema display with 100mbps connection.

IIRC I think Firefox resizes images anyway so its not really needed..

I've always resized my stuff to 800x600 and that plugin still resizes them again..

You're right though.. Those pics are way to big to post up without resizing..

Firefox only resizes images when you view the actual URL. If they are posted in a thread, they will not get sized. The plugin was installed to help make threads more pleasant to view, ie. no sidescrolling, etc.

But yeah, definitely not built to handle some of those photo sizes. Might need to make a forum-wide announcement about picture size... Wonder if there's a hack we can install that will automatically red x anything over a certain size...

Too bad Morgan is busy.

The whole image still has to load before it is resized. So that doesnt help with connection speed or bandwidth.

I think it is a good idea, but the resized image should be bigger than 800x600. If someone is still using a 14" CRT monitor, thats too bad :D

Yeah, thats my main complaint about it.. The resized image is just way too small.. 1024x768 would be better but it probably wouldn't hurt to go even a bit larger..

While I was waiting for my take out (she took my order) I actually asked her if she would come out later and take photos in front of the trucks (she said Sure!) But I was SO pissed that it took so long (and they kept saying "just another minute") that I lost interest. Sorry, dude. I think you two would make a great couple. Just don't have the wedding reception at Hooters... :(

On topic: I like the fact that the forum resizes the photo because to do so on photobucket SUX...but yeah, that thread is crashing my computer. Keith would have to delete, resize offline, then repost. Big job.

Re: Pictures thread crashing?

i downloaded all of Keith SY-1193's pictures, resized them to a more normal size...and hosted them. And pointed all his pics to the smaller versions....

so the thread should be fixed now.

I thought about doing that, but didn't get to it.

You probably had a script to resize them all in a batch and upload them after finishing.

i have some actions saved in photoshop that i use for batch resizing. It woulda taken less time had i set it to demaximize the quality also...so i just did that part by hand. Then a simple upload, and find/replace of keith's post. Took a couple mins, not a big deal

Re: Pictures thread crashing?

everytime the plugin resizes a picture it is doing the process renz did in photoshop.. which i'm sure is hitting the server quite hard..

if we had our own server it probably wouldn't be an issue, however since it is shared it is probably part of the problem.

Re: Pictures thread crashing?

Sorry if the Pics caused a problem.
I hosted them offsite on my Comcast FTP and used links.
I did leave them full size because the new plug-in resizes them automatically and people can click on the smaller pics and get a full size pic to zoom in and see detail.
I use Firefox as a browser and everything worked fine for me.

So where is everyone's pictures???? How come no one else posted pictures?
