Pitman Arm

Well I got around to changing my steering box out as I had to replace both the pitman arm and the idler arm. Here goes my  X 3, After it (meaning the pitman arm only) soak in penetrating oil all night. My pitman arm puller broke trying to get it off, I broke a 2 jaw 3ton puller and right now I have a 5 ton puller on it with it setting in the sun. In case there is a wise guy out there, YES THE NUT AND LOCK WASHER ARE REMOVED.

If I wasn't so :steamer: , I would :banghead: instead I find myself typing this and starting to laugh as I think about this.

Has anyone else had this PROBLEM? What did you do?

You used this one?

What I did when I removed the one off of the SY was to put this on, crank it down tight, then whacked the stering link & pitman arm hard with a 3lb sledge. Popped right apart.

If that doesn't do it, don't forget heat. Use one of those handheld propane torches on the steering link where the pitman goes through. Then use procedure above.

My :2cents: would be to run the puller shown down real tight then whack the puller which may be what 4C FED is saying. Anyway, the sledge hammer is the trick in my book as well.

Re: Pitman Arm

That the one that broke 1st after I hit the link with a 4lb sledge. I applied heat on the 2nd attempt and the 3 ton puller broke when I hit the link with the same sledge. They both sounded like a ring when they broke. I think I have the  steering box from hell.

Re: Pitman Arm

I torque down the pitman arm puller to apply pressure and then whack the pitman arm itself with a 4 lb sledge. I don't think they come of that easy, even when they aren't rusted in place.

Re: Pitman Arm

sure its not welded on. LOL I had the same problem and mine was only replaced last year. Soaking it helped me. I actualy broke a socket. Make sure the puller is lubed up good.

Well I just looked and it's not welded. It has the ring to it when you whack the pitman arm.

Re: Pitman Arm

Well good news, I just got it off. Not too bad, it only cost $115.00 in tools to remove. :rotf: X5

you need to get your money back from the guy that sold you that jaw-puller

It was tools that I got over 25 years ago that broke. The $115.00 was the cost at the time I got them. I can't even tell you how many jobs I use them on, It was more than enough to recover the cost. I most likely made somewhere in the area of $3500.00 with them.

Re: Pitman Arm

If you paid that much 25 years ago I'd suspect they are "name brand" in which case shouldn't you be able to get a free replacement?
