Power steering pulley removal..

Hey!

Is there any alternate way to remove the power steering pulley other than with the special tool it needs? I want to take that whole bracket off but there's that bolt I can't get at behind the tank itself = I'm stuck without getting this pump out first...does a place like Auto Zone or similar typically have these pullers/pressers for loan? Thanks!

yes, autozone loans and sells them. Tool is $20, if you plan to have your truck for awhile it is nice to have laying around ready to use at anytime.

Re: Power steering pulley removal..

Thanks guys! I'll go check it out...

And the idea behind how it works is it simply pulls it off? I see from some diagrams the collar wraps around the snout of the pulley and then I just start turning? What keep the hole thing from spinning as I turn it? Does the tool have a hex that I can hold with a wrench?

And how about putting it back on? Different tool right? Pretty straight forward? Why is there an Allen shaped opening in the snout?

Sorry for all the ???s - I'm sure it will all come clear to me when I actually have the tool in my hand but I've just never had the occasion to need this...

Re: Power steering pulley removal..

the one i have is a two piece collar with a sleeve. a nut sits in the collar to hold it still and you twist in a forcing screw to pull it off. make sure you get the installer you'll ruin the pump and pulley with out it

Stab it and steer it
Re: Power steering pulley removal..

Kragen will rent you the tool as well. Added benefit: Rent it in the morning, remove pulley, return later the same day and no charge at all. Seems weird but I've done it twice now with two local stores. If it's much of a drive call first, not every store has every tool.

It's a big PITA every time. Be sure to put some grease on the pump shaft before installing the pulley to help press it on easier. This has to be one of my least favorite things to do with the truck.
