Project 92 Ty begins...

As most of the regulars know, I purchased my ty in June of 09
When I picked it up in florida it ran, but needed some TLC
Here is a pic when I picked it up

Here are a few more pics of it when I got it back to Pittsburgh. It was dirty, didn't run right, and had broken/missing cladding. As I suspeted, it had been repainted, and it was a BAD repaint. They left the cladding on, and filled some cladding with bondo to look good. So as you will see in the end, I am taking all the cladding off (As of Dec 12, 2009). I am going t be prepping it for paint over the next few months, and updating this thread in teh process. Yes, it runs very nice now, but I need it to look good.
I am taking out the windows, de-racking it, and sanding/body work by myself. I will also be painting it by myself.
I consider myelf pretty mechanical, and take pride in my work, so I will be taking my time on the job.

When I got it home

Got new wheels for it (90 Zr1's)

It cleans up nice, but needs new paint to be great!

So, I took off all the cladding (Off to Marks for repair), and over Xmas break, the rack is taken off and Maybe the windows too!

I am glad to see no rust on it (except a small part near drivers rear window). It has been repainted 2x, so I am going to have to do a lot of sanding, and prep work. Wish me luck!

What section of cladding mounts? Do you mean the large plastic discs or the cladding itself. I sent all the cladding off, but It will be back end of January

Pure curiosity, if your doing the body and paint work yourself, why wouldn't you do the cladding repairs as well. No offense to Mark, he is a great guy and does fine work, but as mentioned, just curious.

Also, what color will you repaint it and whose product. Going single stage urethane or base coat/clear coat. Straight color or metallic?

Yes I drive a Typhoon.
Re: Project 92 Ty begins...

I can't wait to see the progress. This truck looks almost the exact same as mind. :)

I just finished repairing and painting all of the cladding on mine and lowered the rear last weekend.

I was going back and forth on the roof rack but decided to keep it. I kinda like it.

Mark does a great job, so I trust him and have seen his product. Base coat/Clear coat. Straight color (red)

Re: Project 92 Ty begins...

I think the red CCHE scoop is a nice touch.

I am going to put the scoop in a the pass. fender using a trans am style. I like the look of that. It will be a aftermarket fender, not the factory. I will paint both of them so they both match!

Yeah, I am going the same way on the rack, can't decide. It is going to be last minute

Re: Project 92 Ty begins...

If you are going to remove the rack and do it correct you need to pretty much gut the interior, as the side panels around the glass and headliner have to come out , dont even consider painting the truck with the glass installed

Yeah, I know about the interior. That is going to be over the next 2 weekends (Kids toys are in it for xmas)
The glass is coming out too. That is what the previous owner did. He left EVERYTHING on (rack/cladding/windows) It looks like crap.
Any hints about removig the interior plastic?

For the rack, I was going to braise (I believe that is what it is called). The tech teacher (metal shop teacher) where I work said that should work fine on the roof rack. Any thoughts?

Re: Project 92 Ty begins...

when you take the rack of you will see what im saying where the screws are that hold the metal stips down all of the areas are up from the screws pulling , what I did was use a piece of copper on the inside Mig welded them, while it was still hot (you have to move quick) swap the copper for a dolley and use a hammer to tap the srew holes down, Takes some quick moving people but can be done.

OK, so basically, heat up the metal, and tap it down to make a flat surface. Is this what you saying? ANd then weld after? Sorry, I am confused

Re: Project 92 Ty begins...

when you weld the hole you will heat the surrounding area, while its still hot use a body hammer and block to tap it back flat you have to move quick, basically you will hammer the fresh weld while its still hot. Or the other option is to use a stud gun to heat the area and tap it down. Technically you are shrinking the metal this alos works well to remove the "oil can " affect the entire body has but after heating wife the area with a cold wet rag

Ahh ok, do you think brazing will work than>

Re: Project 92 Ty begins...

brazing might work, but there are Much better options out there, also be sure to clean the inside of the roof good and apply a epoxy paint (real epoxy not the rattle can junk) so PPG makes a excellent metal prep and rest preventaive but I cant think of the name right now
