Pulled the bed off my GT

So, this weekend flipped over the bed on my GT in prep for undercoating and POR-15 on the frame. Found exactly what I was hoping and praying I wasn't

Only on one side, and only in the rear three supports
also discovered that the truck was drilled for fender arch cladding :dunno:

So my question is, does anyone have or know somone who has a nice rust free bed they will part with for a song  ?

Or, does anyone know the cheapest and easiest way to replace those?

I'm sure a CO truck that was used and abused would have the same rust, no?

Nope. Not as much humidity, and no salt in the air  CO vehicles are generally rust free :D

It's tempting, although it would be killer to get one shipped out here.

As far as the braces, that last one is partly the end of the bed and partly a support... it is supposed to have a plate there for the frame mount but it disintegrated when I put a little torque on it.

I cannot understand this truck. It has no rust in the cab corners, roof, window seams, doors, etc, but this is totally rotted and 1 2" section of the bedrail is toast too. It also wants fenders and a tailgate.

I am begining to think it was submerged at some point because the scale on the frame (all surface) is pretty gnarly in places too.

and Austin, it's not salt in the air. It's in the water all over the road in the winter... you might as well drive the car in 1" of salt water 6 months out of the year

was it parked on grass? thats what it sounds like rotted from the bottom up
Not to my knowledge, when I bought it it was sitting in a dirt parking lot. Don't know vehicle history other than that it was purchased in 93 as a leftover and then repossesed and sold at auction 4 months later, and then migrated to NH in 94, where it stayed until it was purchased in 03, sat for 3 years, and then I bought it. I'm guessing the sitting killed it because it was definitely used as a winter truck... the rust didn't show up in my Ty (which was a winter truck) until it started sitting around... then it appeared with avengance

I also do not think the truck was ever washed... it has green mold under the cladding :barf: which it turns out was painted at one time

anybody ever used one of these?

little more than I would like to spend but it'd be a good solution to this problem

Wow thats some good cancer. You could buy a beater S10 here for $500 and have the whlle friggin thing... no rust in Texas. I have only lived here for 3 years. Before here was NY, Chicago, Toronto, Michigan... Its amazing. Everything I buy here, beaters and all, are rust free.

I am begining to think that I may just do this... but of course then I have another truck to get rid off.

I think the current plan of attack is to pull the supports and replace them with 2" stainless steel tubing (current dimensions are 2" high x 1 3/8" wide). the bed rail I am not sure about yet, but probably just some mild steel for that and any other patch work I may encounter.

Any good methoods for popping the spot welds ?

Marty and I were just discussing that bed very pricey, but would be neet to have

Well damn Ken...I'll end up spending the "delux" price or more by the time Im done painting the "new" steel bed I found here. Wonder how much the glass version weighs (I didnt see weights listed anywhere)?

jjorgensen52,

If the deal falls through with a fellow board member to come pick up my old bed you can have it for the same price...free. He is supposed to come get it by the end of the month but if that doesnt work out and you want to make the trip its yours...I just need it out of the yard ASAP since it looks like a damn junk yard around here (the Mrs is starting to give me the evil eye about the S10 "yard art"). The bed side on the drivers side is beyond repair IMO but a replacement bed side could be put on and it'd be good as new. Theres some surface rust on one of the cross braces underneath but 10 minutes with a wire brush will fix that or if nothing else you might be able to drill the spot welds and use the braces to replace the rotted ones on your bed.

I'll let ya know if the other member backs out on the deal if youre interested.
