purchase questions

First off, im not sure if this is in the right forum because im not on here very often. I also couldnt seem to find any straight-forward answers to my question by using the search feature.

I am going to look at a 92 typhoon this weekend and i had a few questions:

I am told that the truck hasnt been driven in several years, but that he recently went through it and got it running. he says it runs just fine but he hasnt driven it anywhere yet. what should i look out for on a car that has been sitting?

The previous owner of the truck ran it into a concrete post an messed up the front end, I have been told that the wreck totaled the truck because of the expensive cladding that had to be replaced. So, it now has a salvage title. The current owner told me that he put a new wheel, tie rod, and fender on to fix it. He also said that he bought the needed cladding pieces, but one of them has been broken in the process of moving the car around, etc.
So, the truck has a salvage title. He said the the body is very straight with no rust. What should i look out for on this truck, and what do ya'll think it is worth? Thanks for any info.

first off frame damage!!
get it on a lift, and check it out top to bottom.
salvage title means the price should drop accordingly
you didnt specify miles, so i dont know where to start.
what color??
whats the last 4 numbers of the vin???
look for "new parts" this will give you a good idea how hard the truck was hit, by how many parts were replaced, to make it right agian.

Re: purchase questions

I would make sure the frame is straight, and the steering is tight. Be sure to check for leaks as well (both fluid and vacuum).

Re: purchase questions

it has 49K miles on it(at least that is what he says). i was also thinking frame damage. I was told the color is green/grey. im not sure what the last 4 are, i was going to call him tomorrow and find out. what should i look for in the last 4 digits? where do typhoons typically rust? thanks again.

Re: purchase questions

I wouldn't touch that truck with a 20 foot pole.Unless it was basically free.

Re: purchase questions

If that truck has a sunroof, I remember it being mentioned a few years ago....Considering the miles, sounds like it might be in the money...It does lack some expensive cladding for sure....Also, for some reason the door is missing the round disks for hanging the door cladding....If they had to replace the door, then it could have been hit pretty hard...I would pull the rubber weatherstripping that goes all around the drivers door (on the cab) ...you should be able to tell if they had to straighten out the cab from the wreck...Let me know if you decide to pass on it Jeff, I might take a look at it...I still have my buick in case you know anyone that's looking for one.....Oh, and take a bunch of pics if you can while you're there....If you decide to buy it, you'll have plenty of tech support in Austin...Good group of syty guys there...

edit: it's also missing the front bumper cover

I thought about my wording this morning. By "tight" I mean accurate. Make sure the wheel points the right direction and it tracks straight. I test-drove one with a wheel that seemed to point whatever direction it wanted, regardless of where the truck was going.

If the truck really does come with all of the missing cladding, and it's mechanically sound, I'd probably buy it if I were you. Cladding isn't that hard to install, it probably could use paint, and aside from that, there doesn't appear to be much wrong with the truck. Sounds like a good deal if you ask me.

Re: purchase questions

I called him today and the VIN is 1GDCT18Z0N0811314. If someone could get me a carfax i would appreciate it. he told me he has a guy who has offered him 4500 and he said he would take it but the guy hasnt produced any money yet. how much do you think the missing cladding pieces that it shows are worth? does it sounbd like a decent deal even with the salvage title? i wanted on of these trucks even before i bought my GN, but coudnt because the were too expensive for me. How cool would it be to have bot a gn and a Typhoon...

btw- Im supposed to go look at it tomorrow.

Re: purchase questions

It just looks like a hack job to me.Nothing at all is lined up right if you look closely at the pics.If it runs good, can be fixed right, and the frame is straight,it might be a decent deal.

Re: purchase questions

It's a good price....you can round up any missing pieces here....theobijuan posted some pics of that truck a few years ago here and it had what appeared to be a clean interior....I'm pretty sure it has a sunroof....you can't go wrong for the money if it's the same truck....offer less money for it, because any money saved now, you'll certainly need for it later.....are you going to the clash tonight? I'll be on my way in a few minutes... .
